SAINTS PETER & PAUL SCHOOL
FOLLOWING OUR
STUDENT-ATHLETES
IN HIGH SCHOOL

You walk into our gym and you can't help notice, and be impressed by, the banners proclaiming the success our student-athletes have enjoyed through the years in volleyball, basketball, track, cross country, cheerleading, and football. Whether the accomplishment is in conference play, post-season, play-offs, or tournaments, there is little question Saints Peter & Paul School has produced some outstanding teams and players.

But, does any of this success translate into high school or do they reach their peak performance in 8th grade?

Years ago, our Athletic Association briefly discussed researching the names of our alums who enjoyed the ultimate thrill of being part of a team that accomplished the pinnacle in high school sports. Unfortunately, operating our athletic program was time consuming enough and this daunting task was made even more difficult by the fact that it was extremely challenging to track down this information from the Naperville High Schools.

We do know, however, that it all started with John Zedrow '37. He was the first state champion Naperville Community High School ever had when he won the 100 yd. dash during the 1940-41 school year with a time of 9.9 seconds. John, who was inducted into Naperville Central's Hall of Fame, later played football at the University of Illinois.

Rather than leave the project incomplete, we endeavored to speak with former parents and alumni to put together the following list. Flash forward to the recently completed 2016-17 school term and we note that in the ensuing seventy-seven years, we can verify, anecdotally, 34 more alums who have followed in the footsteps of Mr. Zedrow.

This past year, three more of our graduates joined this prestigious club.....Claire Hill '16 who was part of Naperville North's state champion cross country team; her brother Jack '15 who was a key player on Naperville North's state champion soccer squad; and Katie Piazza '13 who helped lead Benet to the tennis state championship.

We apologize to any alums who have inadvertently been omitted from this list and ask them to forward their title information to us so we can eventually have a complete, and official, listing.

SSPP Trivia

When our school was founded in 1853 .......

......students didn't spend free time doing crossword puzzles
as the first known published crossword puzzle was created by a journalist named Arthur Wynne from Liverpool, who is usually credited as the inventor of the popular word game. December 21, 1913 was the date and it appeared in a Sunday newspaper, the New York World.
