Hello from Berlin

The Object Management Group (OMG) is holding its technical meetings all week in Berlin. Highlights of the meeting will be reported in issue No. 147.

In related news, Claude Baudoin is now wearing an additional hat, as consultant to the OMG to document requirements and opportunities in various vertical domains, including but not limited to Oil & Gas. Please contact him if you are interested in submitting information on the standards used in certain industries, the publications and conferences of interest, the needs for new standards, etc.

Do you use BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) to document and analyze business processes, but you're afraid to get locked in to a specific modeling tool? During the OMG Berlin meeting, the BPMN Model Interchange Working Group will host a live demonstrate the interchange of models on June 17. The participating tool vendors are BOC Group, camunda, itp-Commerce, Omny link, SAP, Signavio, Sparx Systems, Trisotech, W4 Software and Yaoqiang. The demo will be broadcast live on Google Hangout and available via YouTube starting at 16:00 CEST (14:00 GMT, 10:00 Eastern US).

RSA Infographic on Data Governance
Some interesting numbers contained in this infographic:
  • 80% of enterprise data is unstructured and is doubling every 90 days.
  • Big Data initiatives lead to combining structured and unstructured data with incoherent data security policies, leading to exposure.
  • 76% of organizations find it challenging to control access to sensitive data.*
  • 80% of enterprises will fail to develop a consolidated security policy across all data silos.
  • The average cost of each single compromised record containing sensitive information is $200.
* Our take: that's actually good, who wouldn't find it challenging? Don't work with the other 24%, because they have their heads in the sand.
CSCC Guides Are Widely Read
The Cloud Standards Customer Council (CSCC) reports that In 2014, there were 20,000 downloads of its various white papers and practical guides to various aspects of cloud computing. This of course does not include the copies redistributed by readers to their colleagues. Over 7,000 people downloaded the "Impact of Cloud Computing on Healthcare" paper. All papers are available for free from the CSCC's resource hub.
The Paperful Society
We've dreamed about the paperless society for decades, and we're not there yet. John Mancini, head of the Association for Imaging and Information Management (AIIM) just wrote that businesses spend more than $360 billion a year to process forms. And he adds that each lost document costs anywhere between $350 and $700. This is where John and AIIM members hope to bring change through scanning, document management, workflow management, and electronic signature tools.

"Big Data - an infinitely elastic concept that, according to some inexorable but yet unnamed law of technological progress, packs twice as much ambiguity in the same two words as it did the year before."
