Hi there!

We have a huge bag coming your way this week. Clear out your fridge, clean off your countertops, and invite over some friends for dinner. Get ready for the true bounty of Summer in Ohio!

Missed class but want all the pro-tips?
Here is the guide from our 2017 Chicken 101 Class- how to break down and roast up your chicken.

We are not kidding-- this is the bag to beat all bags! Everyone will get a 3# bag of Yukon Gold Potatoes, four ears of crisp sweet corn (first of the season!! enjoy right away for the sweetest flavor), one large leek, a bunch of bunching onions, a pound of green beans, a pair of green peppers, a quarter peck of peaches (5-6), and a generous handful of large, 'Early Summer' apples. Also, all the omnivores will be getting one of our free-range whole chickens!

The Vegetarian bags will get a bunch of other fruit and veggies to replace the chicken: blueberries, tomatoes, eggplant and summer squash. The Larges will get a loaf of freshly-baked whole wheat bread from Wholesome Valley Farm's Bakery, some summer squash, blackberries and a pound of Salt & Pepper Pork Sausage in bulk (Vegetarians will get double peaches instead.)

This bag is a wallop!

A heads up on the apples: this week you'll all see some of the season's first apples. We'll try to give you the exact name of the type of apples you'll have in your bags at each stop, but we will be getting a smattering of different types. Typically, 'Early Summer' apples (like last week's Lodi) aren't the super crisp and sweet varieties that you'll see later in the Fall. But, they do make great baking/sauce apples-- chop them up and simmer them down with some peaches, maple syrup and steel cut oats for a delicious breakfast. If you are an apple fiend and want to learn more about all the varieties and uses of different types of apples (and ogle over gorgeous fruit-photography), check out Rowan Jacobsen's Apples of Uncommon Character. Also, keep your eyes peeled for our own online guide coming out closer to Fall with some uses, recipes and tasting notes for the apples grown right around here.

REMINDERS
Already thinking about Winter? You're nuts, but we are too.

It's July, but with all the slightly cooler, sweater-weather evenings as of late you might be thinking about Fall. The Summer Season runs all the way until the end of October, but then the Winter Share will start right up the following week.

For those of you who are new to our program, we do offer a Winter Share: we run every week (just like Summer) until Thanksgiving, and then the pick ups are every other week until mid-May. There are just two bag options, Vegetarian and Omnivore, and the bag is roughly equivalent to one of our Summer Large Shares.

Up until the New Year, you'll still see lots of cold-loving greens (chard, kale, spinach, broccoli, Bok choy, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, etc.), squash (Acorn, Butternut, Hubbard, Red Kuri, etc.), apples, potatoes, pears and onions. Once the weather gets a little colder, you'll have some summer flash-backs: canned peaches, frozen tomatoes and sweet corn (we're processing this right now!), strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. We comb the area to find great, locally-made substitutes to fill up your bags: eggs, pastas, beans, tofu, prepared sauces, baked goods and more.

We will be opening registration in August, but you can either choose to pay fully-upfront ($675 cash or check; 3% processing fee applies to CC purchases), or Half-&-Half (two payments of $357.50; first payment due at the start of the season, and second payment due in January.)

Click here to see pictures of last Winter's Bags, and keep your eyes peeled for the Season Announcement next week (pssst-- we have limited spots and we will open it up to you all first.)

EVENTS

A sun-ripened tomato needs only a touch of salt and olive oil. And delicious handmade pastas and sauces require the freshest ingredients and a light & skilled touch for a similar perfection.

Parker spent a few months this past Spring in Italy, tucked into warm, old-village kitchens, and learning from the nonnas themselselves the techniques they use every day to make these simple and heartwarming dishes, from scratch, by hand.

This week's bag has all the fixings for a huge Chicken Dinner: mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, a green salad, sautéed green beans and of course the perfectly roasted bird at the center of the table. The only thing missing from each version is some buttery cornbread, slathered with maple syrup!
