What  you need to know
about septic systems
How they work.
A septic tank consists of one or more concrete or plastic tanks of between 1,000 and 2,000 gallons. One end is connected to an inlet wastewater pipe and the other to a septic drain field .There are three basic layers in a septic system. Fats, grease and oils float on the top. The middle layer is mostly clear, partially-treated water. The bottom layer is for the solids.
Oooh, that smell!
Septic tanks can fill up fast if you flush too many solids down your toilet or garbage disposal. And because the system depends on beneficial bacteria and microorganisms to break down the waste, don't ever put hazardous substances into the system and use organic and biodegradable household products whenever possible.

How to keep your septic happy.
The CT DPH recommends pumping your septic every 3-5 years. Not limiting your disposal of solids will typically result in pumping more often. Note: Putting chemicals down the drain or toilet could also contaminate nearby groundwater.
