October is National Farm to School Month. Duane Sorensen, Director of Food Service for Chartwell's Food Service, toured the Bloom Community Farm with Lynea Petty and Jeanne Liston of the Blaine County Hunger Coalition. Bloom Community Farm hopes to become an outdoor classroom for the community. Teachers and administrators are in conversation with farm staff to explore potential collaboration. Currently, students from Silver Creek High School are interning at the farm to learn how to harvest vegetables and tend vegetables, as well as build creative, useful structures for the farm.

Students Give Back to the Community
7th grade students from Wood River Middle School volunteered on a recent sunny Saturday morning picking up litter along Highway 21 near Timmerman junction. WRMS Language Arts teacher Sara Shafer and retired WRMS teacher Janene Alleman led the charge to improve the environment and facilitate some bonding among the 7th grade class. Shafer wrote, "I love getting the chance to hang out with the kids outside of the classroom on a gorgeous day. It is so great for kids to be a part of making the world a better place. It is fulfilling from all perspectives." Aside from interesting and mundane litter, students saw almost 50 sand hill cranes which served as a reminder of why it is so important to keep the environment free of trash.

Fractions Take Center Stage
How do students demonstrate that they understand how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions? In Greg Gvozdas' 6th grade math class at Wood River Middle School, students collaborate in teams to present a skit on fractions. Gvozdas wrote, "The Fraction Skit is a fun way to make sure the students understand fraction concepts. They need a recognizable real world plot, and have a few fraction requirements they must incorporate into their skit. In addition to performing the skits, they make a poster displaying their math. It is a quick two-three day in-class project that allows me to see if they truly understand fractions." Students were highly engaged while planning their skits at the Wood River Middle School library.

Outdoor Classroom Helps Students Discover Their Talents
Personal growth takes many forms throughout a lifetime. Through the VOICE II program, students are stretching and growing by getting outside their comfort zone, both figuratively and literally. Instructor Jamie Ellison takes students to the Heyspur Fish Hatchery to learn how to manage fish in the hatchery. Ellison said, "There were many uncomfortable things the students had to try for the first time, from climbing inside a tank to wearing unfamiliar gear. We have one student who has become so engaged with this weekly project that it's the highlight of his week."

What are your true colors when it comes to showing your support for students who are bullied?
Wednesday, October 19
All elementary students are encouraged to wear orange (shoelaces, hair ribbons, or anything else that fits with the dress code) to show their true colors when it comes to showing support for students who are bullied. Teen interns from the Advocates will be at each school to hand out orange bracelets to students and to encourage students to unite against bullying.
