Stories of Stewardship - John & Lea Thullbery
|
|
Two kids, a mortgage, a car payment, credit card debt, and lots of stuff. The irony was we wanted more. More security for our children, the ability to travel, a new car, more stuff. We had been very active at St. Timothy’s for 27 years at this point in our lives and had heard, every year around October, how important our pledge was. And each October we struggled with how we could possibly step up to the challenge of a significant offering much less 10 percent.. Then came Dave Ramsey and Financial Peace University.
We participated in a course offered at St. Timothy’s not long after Father Steve and his family joined us. Exploring together with 25 other folks how to extinguish the enslavement of debt we slowly began to understand. The combination of techniques we learned in class on how to free ourselves from debt and words from the pulpit on who we are and whose we are finally began to make sense.
So we began a two year journey of debt reduction and deliberate assessment of stuff. Instead of waiting to become debt free before we offered 10 percent of our income we decided to step out on faith and offer our tithe at the beginning of that journey. There were many moments along the way of celebration but two memories stuck with us and they happened in the same month. We received an odd automatic debit bill from one of our credit card companies. When we inquired with the company we were informed that the odd amount was actually our last payment bringing our balance to zero (Dave was right). The second happened two weeks later upon completing our tax return. Our end of the year giving statement from St. Timothy’s was exactly 10 percent of our combined income (God was right). It was a very good month.
Not a day goes by that we don’t stop and consider whether the things we want are really the things we need. And as God promised we were never left wanting for anything important. Letting go of control and trusting in God’s promise to provide the things we need has given us the peace to appreciate the things we have been given charge of everyday. Thanks be to God!

New To St Timothy's?
Common Prayer & Cornbread

Whether you've visited once or have a preferred pew, if you are ready to move deeper into community and fellowship at St. Timothy's, this luncheon is for you. Join us Oct. 16 at 12:30pm for a BBQ lunch (vegan and vegetarian options available) to meet the staff, vestry, and leaders of different ministries, learn about who St. Timothy's is as a parish, and how we work to grow in faith and service.
Church is more than just being on a membership list, and if you seek to become part of our family at St. Timothy's, or simply find out if we are the kind of family you would like to join, we hope you will share our table.
Good food, good conversation, and good times to be had. See you there! Please RSVP to Katie Harper at

The Abraham Project - Becky Johnston, Program Director
|
Hello again from The Abraham Project! By the time you read this, I will be on my way to Texas for my first Episcopal Service Corps meeting. I'm looking forward to learning more about the other ESC programs and finding out what we can implement here.
I'm so grateful for the way that TAP continues to run. We had our first daylong retreat in a couple weeks ago and enjoyed time at Seven Springs. The girls had a morning "retreat of silence" and then we did some teambuilding in the afternoon. Our next retreat will be Veterans Day weekend in North Myrtle Beach. We are fortunate to have a beach condo that was donated for our weekend.
All three ladies are now well into their internships. Each of them has started to find her own rhythm within her agency, as well as within our parish. Next week I will bring to you some more specific ways that you can partner with our interns as they serve us this year. For now, I covet your prayers for my time in Texas. And I'm sure my husband and in-laws will covet your prayers for their time with our girls while I'm gone.

What: Halloween Trunk-or-Treat
When:
Sunday, Oct.30
Time:
5-6:30pm
Where: Upper Drake Parking Lot
Who: St.Timothy's folks, neighbors, and friends!
What is Trunk-or-Treat?
Trunk-or-Treat is an event where people can hand out Halloween treats from the trunks of their cars. It's a safe alternative to going door-to-door.
Who is handing out candy?
You are! All St.Timothy's people are invited to bring their cars and chairs and hand out treats at your trunks. We can't know exactly how many kids will come--but plan for at least 75 kids.
Is there a contest this year?
Yes! Awards will be given for the best trunks! Be as creative as you like! You can decorate your cars, wear costumes, play spooky music, have games, and more!
Where do we park?
If you are handing out candy, park in the upper Drake parking lot. Plan to be parked before
4:45pm
and please stay until
6:35pm
for the safety of our kids. If you are just coming to enjoy the festivities, please park near Gribbin Hall.
What if it rains?
Bring your treats into Drake Hall to hand out, and we'll have a Monster Mash & costume parade.

Let's cheer on our neighbors who are running in the Ardmore RAH 10K on
Saturday, Oct.22
. The Ardmore RAH (racing against hunger) is an annual race held in our neighborhood to raise money & awareness for the the Second Harvest Food Bank. The race runs down Bellview Street and back (past St.Timothy's entrance two times)--so we will have "cheerleaders" gathered from
9-10am
at the Belview/Parkway Drive intersection. If you'd like to join our group, please contact Katie Bryant (
[email protected]
). Youth can receive service hours for helping! We specifically need one more adult to help out--contact Katie if interested. If you're running in the 10K--let us know! We'll make you a poster!
