Donate blood at this week's drive, save three lives

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. On average, the Red Cross must collect 14,000 blood donations every day to keep up. That's EVERY day, all year long!

Kansas State Polytechnic will be holding a blood drive for the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Please consider donating blood because your generosity could save three people's lives.

The blood drive will be held Wednesday, Oct. 26 and Thursday, Oct. 27 in the Tech Center lobby area near the soda and candy machines. Sign-up sheets are in the Library so that you can reserve an appointment.

If you donate, please:
  • Drink extra fluids the day of and the day before donating
  • Be sure to eat the day of the donation
  • Bring a picture ID and your Red Cross ID if you have donated before
* One thing to be aware of, if you gave on Thursday of the last blood drive you will need to wait until Thursday of this blood drive. Red Cross requires a period of 8 weeks between blood donations.
Seeking interview clothing donations for career closet

Kansas State Polytechnic Career Services are attempting to ramp up the career closet on campus.

For those unfamiliar with what that is, a career closet is simply business type clothing that students could borrow for interviewing and networking events. We are looking for suits, sport coats, ties, dresses, skirts, dress pants, shoes, scarves; anything that would be appropriate attire for an interview. Many of our students have not yet invested in business type clothing and it would be very helpful to them if they could instead borrow until they get out and start making money to buy that type of wardrobe.

If you have business clothes that you would like to donate, contact Julie Rowe at [email protected] to arrange a pickup, or you can deliver them to Julie's office in College Center 208.
Project management certification exam prep class

Wichita PMP Certified Professionals will help prepare you for either the CAPM or PMP Certification with the Velociteach PMP Certification Training Program.

PMP/CAPM certification is the gold standard of project management certification. The PMP/CAPM validates your competence to perform in the role of a project manager, leading, and directing projects and teams.

The course will be offered on November 5, 12, and 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Salina.

For more information, contact Kirsten Zoller at [email protected]

DVACK holding 'Light the Night' candlelight vigil

The Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas will be holding a candlelight vigil for Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Oct. 27 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Campbell Plaza on Santa Fe.  Light the Night will not only raise awareness for domestic violence, but also remember victims and survivors.

You're invited to join Light the Night for awareness and remembrance. A $2 or more donation will include a candle and your choice of hot cocoa or apple cider. All proceeds will go to the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas.

Tech company DJI visits K-State Polytechnic Campus
DJI, a technology company headquartered in Shenzhen, China, made a stop on the Polytechnic Campus last week to connect with the UAS program.

Brandon Montellato, DJI's university relations manager, toured the unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS, lab space as well as spoke with Kurt Carraway, executive director of the UAS program, and  Antonio Asebedo, assistant professor of agronomy on the Manhattan campus, about DJI's technology capabilities and opportunities for students after graduation.

DJI produces and sells unmanned aircraft systems as a whole as well as just their payload systems (camera) and airframe.
UAS program featured on PBS's 'Sunflower Journeys'
The unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS, program is flying high with another opportunity in the media spotlight.

KTWU, which is the local PBS station, featured the UAS program on an episode of "Sunflower Journeys" Oct. 20 highlighting education in the state. One-third of the program was devoted to the UAS program, focusing on academics, research and flight training. Several faculty, staff and students were interviewed and a flight demo in the Smoky Hill UAS Pavilion was shown.

A producer from "Sunflower Journeys" visited the campus last spring to collect all of the footage. To watching the entire episode, visit KTWU's website HERE.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. Kansas State Polytechnic's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.
