Award winning "Refugee Camp in my Neighbourhood" returns
Cumberland Council is delighted to announce the return of the
award winning "Refugee Camp in my Neighbourhood".
The simulated refugee camp will
return to the Auburn Centre for the Community from Monday 31 July to Friday 11 August.
The project
is a joint initiative of Cumberland Council and the Auburn community. It invites refugees and asylum seekers to lead tours through the camp and share their
personal experience of seeking asylum with the wider community
.
Cumberland has one of the highest populations of refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia. Over the past 25 years more than 20,000 refugees have settled in Cumberland.
This event offers personal insight into the experiences of these refugees, while creating
a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the contribution refugees make to our community.
The highlight of the week-long schedule is the Journey's Picnic on Saturday 5 August, 10am-4.30pm. You are invited to join with representatives from our diverse community, including refugees and asylum seekers, for a celebration of food, culture and games.

Cherry Blossom Festival:
Yozakura Movie Night
Tickets for the 2017 Cherry Blossom Festival are now on sale. A highlight is the Yozakura Movie Night. Yozaukura is the Japanese tradition of admiring cherry blossoms at night.
On Friday 25 August, 80 special guests will tour the Japanese gardens by moonlight before watching the 2016 cult classic
"Shin Godzilla"

The outdoor screening is just part of the larger festival, which includes food
tasting with MasterChef Adam Liaw,
Silent Disco with Japanese superstar DJ Yui Kanna,

Local Government Week 2017
Cumberland Council is inviting residents to explore the full breadth of Council's services by visiting an information stall during Local Government Week, 31 July - 6 August.
Council Staff will be available from 10am - 4pm each workday at the following locations:
- Monday 31 July - Stockland Merrylands
- Tuesday 1 August - Portico Plaza Shopping Centre, Toongabbie
- Wednesday 2 August - Auburn Central
- Thursday 3 August - Greystanes Shopping Centre
- Friday 4 August - Lidcombe Centre
Council's furriest staff member, Poppy the Possum, will also be there. The lovable mascot of Council's early literacy program 'Paint Cumberland REaD' will hand out free copies of a new children's book exploring local government.

Council Elections on 9 September: check your voting status
Cumberland Council elections are on Saturday, 9 September. It is the first time since the amalgamation that residents have the opportunity to vote for who will represent them on Council.
Voting is compulsory for everyone enrolled in the Council area so now is the time for you to check your enrolment details to make sure they are up to date.

Eid Breakfast marks watershed moment in Australian history
Cumberland Council Administrator Viv May attended an Eid Breakfast on Saturday 15 July at Auburn Gallipoli Mosque. For members of Cumberland's Turkish community, this year's Eid celebration coincides with another important anniversary.
Forty years ago
Turkey became the first country outside of Western Europe to sign an assisted passage agreement with Australia.
This was a defining moment in Australia's history. It helped transform Australia into the modern, multicultural country it is today. Speaking at the event Administrator Viv May said, "It wasn't always an easy journey. The Turkish community were the first post-war immigrants of non-Christian and non-European descent. But it was a successful one. Today there are around 60,000 Turkish-Australians living in Australia."
