A Note from Lotte

As we head into a new season, with the changing colors, I feel like I need to reflect on the amazing things that we have done throughout the years of running SMILE Mass. Many of you have been with us right from the start. And for that I am forever thankful. I still pinch myself, thinking how lucky I am to help form a world where we all belong.

I would like to think that for the many families whom use our programs, we become so much more than a quick beach day or a one-day experience. I would like SMILE Mass to be a resource, a sense of hope and a big breath of fresh air; So families like mine can continue to create happy memories, do meaningful things with and for their loved one with disabilities.

Families like mine often think of tomorrow - what will happen when we can't take care of our loved ones. The true fact is, most of us don't really know. We all know the big changes will come at 22 years old, when our children no longer belong to the public school system.  Only yesterday I was asked that exact question, "What are you going to do when he turns 22"? The truth is I am not sure! But one thing I do know is that as long as I have SMILE Mass, I can help to create opportunities for kids like Nicholas, help families whom are struggling to figure out what comes next. So although our programs often look like we just have fun, they are so much more. A playground becomes an breeding ground for learning; the beach becomes a choice, not an obstacle.  Being able to do what millions of Americans can choose to do everyday. Our running program was created to help our communities to integrate, be more tolerant and, again, create a world where we all belong despite disabilities. Wheelchair or not, everyone just wants to feel needed and fit in.

So today, I would like to ask you to embrace all the good in your life. Dare to be different, inspire a friend. But most importantly enjoy life and don't sweat the little things.

Best,
Lotte
