2016/2017 October Paw Print
Lower School Principal, Ms. Karetov

Happy Autumn!  We are already midway through the first quarter of the school year!  I cannot believe how quickly this year is progressing.

We have been busy at the beginning of this year.  Students have been assessed for reading and math skills and are working hard with their teachers on learning the Core Knowledge Sequence and state standards.  They are also stating Daily 5 rotations around reading and writing.  We have had visits from Warner Nature Center with a few classes already having field trips to learn about nature, our environment, and the earth.  Students are starting to be tested on quarter benchmarks.  School is in the swing of things as we head into MEA weekend.

OLPA tests will be given to 3rd and 4th grade students on October 26 and 27.  This gives the students practice on using computers for testing, see samples of math and reading samples that will appear on future tests, and identify what areas to set goals and make growth as the year moves forward.

We are looking forward to a highly successful Marathon Day!  As of today, we have received over $90,000 in donations.  If you would like to donate, please click here or go to stcroixprep.org and click on the donate link.  Marathon Day proves to be active and busy, with opening ceremonies beginning around 11:15, the event starting at noon, a pepfest at 3:00, and various activities in between.  We are still looking for volunteers to help make the events run smoothly.  If you are interested, please plan to attend.  It is a really fun, exciting day to celebrate SCPA (and the weather is supposed to hold up, too)!

We have some exciting activities that have started or are up-coming.  The Lower School Theater Club has been separated between two different groups of 3rd and 4th grade students.  Practices are before school, and the performances are in December.  Also, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have an opportunity to participate in a  Battle of the Books  competition at SCPA on December 6.  Permission forms are due on Tuesday, October 18 so that students are placed on teams of five and are able to check-out one of the 12 books to read over MEA.  Continental Math League is for 3rd and 4th graders who want to compete in math.  Please watch for information in future emails from your teachers about how to sign up to participate.

Please be aware of the guidelines for dressing up for the Fall Celebration on Monday, October 31.  Students may dress up as a character from their favorite book or an historical figure.  Students will be discussing/reading/sharing about their character of choice as a curricular analysis in the classrooms.  Please remember that costumes must be appropriate for school and not include fake weapons, gore, blood, etc.  If students do not dress for Halloween, the school uniform must be worn to school.

Please remember to call the Lower School attendance line at (651) 395-5991 if your child will be absent or tardy.  If you have a transportation change, please  email  the teacher  before noon, and if it is  after noon, please  call  Sara Bodin in the Lower School office at (651) 395-5920.  Also note, we will not deliver in-depth information about after-school activities to students in the classroom.  We will only be delivering changes in transportation arrangements.  This ensures that there is minimal disruption to the learning occurring in the classroom.  We cannot be responsible for missed information other than the changes.  In the parent pickup areas, please ensure that you are staying in your cars, have signs with your child’s last name posted, do not use technology, and continue to pull up as far ahead as possible.  This ensures respect of those in line behind you and a faster and safe pick-up process.

Have a safe and enjoyable MEA vacation!

Go Lions!
