Islamophobia in Both Political Parties
By Donna Nevel

"Sunday evening's debate revealed the deeply-held and dangerous Islamophobic views and positions of both candidates and political parties. One particularly pernicious view that we heard stated, as if it were a given that requires no discussion, is that Muslims are responsible for reporting (to law enforcement and those in power) bad things happening within their communities. Both candidates responded to the following question by a member of the Muslim community: "You've mentioned working with Muslim nations, but with Islamophobia on the rise, how will you help people like me deal with the consequences of being labeled as a threat to the country after the election is over?" Donald Trump said: "We have to be sure that Muslims come in and report when they see something going on. When they see hatred going on, they have to report it," while Hilary Clinton answered: "We need American Muslims to be part of our eyes and ears on our front lines." And they each then spoke about defeating ISIS as if that were a natural, logical part of the conversation when talking about Muslims in the U.S.

This view-that conflates Muslims with ISIS and requires Muslims to demonstrate their allegiance to the U.S. by identifying and reporting those "bad" Muslims-feeds into the racist and anti-Muslim propaganda about who commits acts of violence in the U.S. and who is responsible for that violence. In fact, acts of violence, even if they are not called "terrorism" (a term that is discriminatory in how it gets used), are committed by every race and religion (and disproportionately by white men). Further, when someone from a particular group commits an act of violence, who is responsible for it? (Answer: not each and every member of that group); and who is responsible for condemning it? (Answer: not each and every member of that group). This perspective about culpability is also devoid of any analysis that addresses US-sponsored racial violence, both within the U.S. and across the globe, which is exactly where discussions of who is responsible for violence should start.

This whole framing simply doesn't speak to the double standard of what and whose actions are considered terrorism (ignoring the terrorism of white Americans and of the State), what gets covered by the media (focusing on sensationalist, anti-Muslim propaganda), and how easy and "normal" it is to hurl false assumptions of guilt against an entire people (something that we would-selectively-scream bloody murder about if it happened to other communities).

It also doesn't speak to the fact that these totally fabricated narratives enable the U.S. government to demonize, target, and surveil entire communities while also bombing Muslim-majority countries across the globe." Read More.

Academics Criticise Anti-radicalisation Strategy in Open Letter

"We are concerned with the implementation of "radicalisation" policies within the UK  Prevent strategy, internationally referred to as countering violence extremism. Tools that purport to have a psychology evidence base are being developed and placed under statutory duty while their "science" has not been subjected to proper scientific scrutiny or public critique.

Of particular concern is the Extremism Risk Guidance 22+ (ERG22+) framework that is being used as the basis for assessing risk of "radicalisation" and referral to the Channel programme. More than 500,000 public servants have been placed under a duty to implement the tool and several dozen children have been directly affected, through the courts, based on assessments using the tool. The impact is significant and cannot be emphasised enough.
We endorse the recent statement by the Royal College of Psychiatrists calling for publication of the ERG22+ study. We call on the Home Office to do so and further to invite debate by experts.
All those engaged in academic study should continue to serve the interests of society by remaining faithful to the ethical standards and science of their traditions. Where we play a role cooperatively with government policy, we should hold ourselves to the highest possible standards to ensure that we maintain the independence and transparency of our professions". "More than 140 experts attack Prevent 'risk factors' by which 4,000 people were referred for assessment last year

Confidential research used by the government as the basis for identifying radicalisation in the controversial Prevent programme relies on flawed science, a group of academics has claimed.

The study, conducted by psychologists at the prison service, identified 22 "risk factors" for gauging whether individuals are vulnerable to engaging with terrorist groups or posing a security risk.

The risk factors, which have become known as the Extremism Risk Guidance 22+, form the basis for the "vulnerability assessment framework" carried out under Channel, a strand of the Prevent programme that aims to identify and engage with people believed to be at risk of radicalisation.

Referrals to Channel can come from teachers, social workers, healthcare workers and police. Last year, nearly 4,000 people were referred for assessment,  including children younger than nine.
The exact contents of the study have been deemed classified by the government, and the Ministry of Justice has previously refused to release it when asked by the Guardian. An official claimed that releasing the details of the 22 risk factors would compromise the assessment.

However, the study's authors, psychologists Monica Lloyd and Christopher Dean in the National Offender Management Service,  published an article about their methodology in an academic journal last year". Read More.

Update: On Imam Alaudin Akonjee & His Assistant Thara Uddin Who Were Shot & Killed August 13, 2016 in Ozone, Queens, NY

On August 14, 2016 one day after the killing of our beloved Imam Maulana Akonjee and his Assistant Thara Uddin, The Majlis As-Shura (Islamic Leadership Council) of NY sent a letter to the community about a plan of action for addressing the crisis. The Plan included help organizing the Janazah (funeral), holding an emergency meeting for Imams, Community Leaders and activists, Issuing a statement, organizing a press conference and  raising funds for the families of the two Imams who were shot dead on their return home after noon prayers at their mosque Masjid AlFuqan. So far the Majlis has created a GoFundMe Account to benefit the families of the victims and has raised over $100,000.00. While the GoFundMe account is still active online, the collected amount has already been given to the families.
Community members have expressed their concerns that this violence in their neighborhood and directed towards the Muslim community at large is a direct result of recent political rhetoric that has incited hate speech and violence.
According to a NYPD official the city has spent over $1000,000.00 on the security of the neighborhood where the two Imams where killed. While the community believe that this is a hate crime, it is yet to be officially proved to be so or not. The final decision is expected to be made on November 03, 2016.
Majlis's Historic Win of 2016:
The Passing of Anti-Islamophobia
Res. 1230-2016 by NY City Council

By Allah's grace and the excellent and tireless work of Councilman Miller, The Muslim community can now celebrate this resolution as the most historic win of the year. We sincerely thank Councilman Daneek Miller and his staff and to all members of New York City Council who sponsored and or supported this resolution with him as well as advocacy groups and organizations that joined this struggle and testified in support of the resolution. We also thank Muslims and fellow New Yorkers who came out, attended and or testified in solidarity with Muslims, freedom of speech and religion and against hatred and bigotry.
We encourage all Muslim American communities to request the passing of a similar ant-Islamophobia resolution by their local governments and we offer the language of Res. 1230-2016 as a useful model to base your draft resolutions upon. Below please find the text of Anti-Islamophobia Res. 1230-2016. Also, we are happy to learn that the city of Miami just

The Domestic Terrorists Who Plotted to Blow A Mosque Up in Kansas

(NY 10/14/16) The Majlis Ash Shura (Islamic Leadership Council) of New York condemns the failed terrorist plot to blow a whole apartment complex just because its residents are Muslim.   On October 14, 2016, " Three members of a Kansas militia group were charged Friday with plotting to bomb an apartment complex that's home to Somali immigrants in the western Kansas meatpacking town of Garden City, a thwarted attack prosecutors say was planned for the day after the November election." As we commend the FBI for arresting the terrorists before carrying out their crime, we hope that the American public would learn from this incident that violent extremism is not particular to any religious community and that it is a threat to all communities.
We also call upon our communities to be vigilant during this presidential race that has been one of the main reasons of Islamophobia and violence against Muslims.
