An Emerald Affair for Compassionate Care

ONLINE REGISTRATION

October begins the busy season at Open Arms Free Clinic as we start seeing an increase in patient registrations and current patients requesting more doctor appointments. Seasonal employment layoffs begin and folks find that their last paycheck didn't stretch far enough to cover rent, heat, food, gas and medicine. The weather changes and the aches and pains are felt deeply. The health insurance Marketplace open enrollment begins on November 1st however even when a person pays that first premium, the plan doesn't start until January 1st.  The days get darker and hopes for things to get better do to....

This also is the season we find ourselves validating the need for a free clinic in Walworth County.   From January 1 - September 30, 2016 OAFC had 2,860 patient visits.  There have already been 300 new patients registered in 2016.  The health care landscape continues to evolve with increased access to health insurance, however the economic landscape is not evolving as quickly. While our county is absolutely rich with natural resources and beauty, we are also one of only four counties with a poverty rate higher than the state average (see graphic below).  In addition, a recent report published by the United Way of Wisconsin indicates 30% of county households are unable to afford life's basic necessities. Pride keeps poverty invisible, however our friends, neighbors, and co-workers are just 1-2 paychecks away from barely making ends meet, just one life event away from loosing everything.

On December 2, 2016 we will be celebrating FOUR (4) years of service from treating our first patient at Open Arms Free Clinic.  Y ou see the growing list below of professional volunteers who have joined our team to expand services to more days and hours in the week. Even with 20,000 hours of donated services to date, there is room for more.  An hour of donated dental care eliminates pain and provides a smile. Each donated dollar is stretched to provide $10 worth of medical care that keeps our friends able to show up for work the next day.  You are part of our circle of friends to make this all possible.

So while it may be getting darker outside and lighter in our pockets, we all have at least one gift to give, and it is the greatest gift of all - LOVE. I thank all our volunteers who give love to our patients and for your support to have given me a life with passion and purpose.

Sincerely,
Sara Nichols, MPH
Executive Director
