HOMECOMING WEEK BEGINS TOMORROW
As I write this update, the Peninsula High ASB is diligently working on transforming our high school for Homecoming Week. It is always a thrill to walk on campus, the Monday morning of Homecoming week, and be transported into another world. In a secret location, the students have been working for weeks on creating the props, signs, etc... I know homecoming week will be spectacular.
Every day during lunch this week there will be activities and wonderful performances in the amphitheater. Our Panther family will not want to miss these memorable Homecoming activities!
It's Homecoming Week!
It's a time for us to come together to celebrate Homecoming and enjoy this week's theme, "Once Upen a Time". This theme takes us back to some of our favorite stories, including fables and tales of heroes, villains, and 'happily-ever-afters'. Explore our campus this week! You'll find princesses and princes, the Forbidden Forest, Peter Pan's 'Neverland', Alice's 'Wonderland', 'Fable-land' and much more!
Our Panther family is in store for countless fun activities throughout the week!
On Monday, we'll introduce the Homecoming Court. Panthers can vote for their grade level princesses and princes, as well as for Homecoming Queen and King. Here are the links, which will be open until this Thursday, October 20th at 11:15 am. Students need to enter their last name and their student ID number, which can be found on their ID card.
Throughout the week, Homecoming Dance and Carnival tickets will be on sale in the Student Store. Dance tickets are $17 with ASB and $22 without ASB. This dance sells out every year, so don't wait to purchase them!
Food and fun spirit items will be available for purchase during the carnival on Friday, which will be from 1:07 pm until 2:45 pm. These items may only be purchased with carnival tickets. Tickets are $1 each and available at the Student Store all week. Here's the plan for the week:
Monday, October 17
In addition to the introduction of our Homecoming Court, we'll have performances by Pep Flags, Choreo Company and Co-ed Choreo
Tuesday, October 18
We'll have a 'Humpty-dumpty' Egg Toss Competition and performances by JV Song, Advanced Dance and Varsity Song
Wednesday, October 19
There will be a performance by Varsity Dance and our first ever Teacher/Staff Lip-Sync Contest
Thursday, October 20
Look forward to a class competition and performances by JV Cheer and Varsity Cheer
Friday, October 21
A jam-packed day! During the Homecoming Carnival, our 9th, 10th, and 11th grade level princesses and princes will be announced. Then we'll have our Homecoming Football Game vs. Redondo at 3 pm. During half time of the game, we'll honor our senior girls on Homecoming Court and crown our Senior Princess and Homecoming Queen.
Last, the Homecoming Dance will be from 7:30-10:30 pm. During the dance we'll have an exciting performance from Co-ed Choreo and we'll honor our senior boys on Homecoming Court and crown our Senior Prince and Homecoming King.
Students need to bring their student ID's to the dance! We will be using scanners to scan in every student as they enter the dance.
The rules for the dance are the following:
Dress Code:
Undergarments must be covered at all times. Tank tops must fit snugly on the sides and top. No "bandeau" tops may be worn. No strapless tops. Midriffs may not show. Skirts/shorts must completely cover the rear end. No swim suits may be worn; outfits that resemble swimsuits may not be worn. Spandex may only be worn underneath other garments. See-through or sheer material may not be worn. Tops may not have holes. Gentlemen must wear shirts at all times and must keep pants and shorts at the waistline.
Students attending this dance promise not to break the Palos Verdes Peninsula High School Code of Conduct, especially concerning violence and the consumption of alcohol and drugs. Students must have a CURRENT ('16-'17) school ID with them. The doors to the dance will close at 8:30 pm, so students may not enter the dance after that time. Once students leave the dance, they may not return. Students who attend a high school other than Peninsula, Palos Verdes or Rancho Del Mar may only attend the dance if they have turned in a completed and approved Guest Pass to the Student Store PRIOR to the day of the dance. Students who lose their dance tickets will not be issued a replacement.
Students in violation of the Dress Code will not be allowed to enter the dance and students found to be in violation of the Dress Code FOLLOWING entrance to the dance will be removed from the dance. Students not permitted to enter the dance or who are asked to leave due to inappropriate attire will not be given refunds.
Lewd and lascivious dancing will not be tolerated. Students dancing inappropriately will be asked to leave the dance and will not be given refunds.
A big thanks to our ASB, who has worked for months creating the decorations around campus and planning all of these memorable activities!
Follow-up on our 'Pink Out' Football Game
ASB wants to thank the Zoo for purchasing so many 'Pink Panthers' shirts for our Pink Out game on October 7th! We made $492.25, all of which we are donating to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Thank you, Panthers, for coming together for such an important cause!

MODEL UNITED NATIONS NEWS
Southern Orange County MUN Conference in Santa Margarita
On Saturday, September 23, Peninsula High's Model United Nations club attended the Southern Orange County MUN conference in Santa Margarita.
It was a special occasion for Peninsula's club because it was the first chance for many of the new members to compete in the novice division. It was headed by the newly elected Secretariat Members Joey Black, Sommer DeRudder, and Olivia Mathiesen.
The novice committees, for both freshmen and non-freshman novices, were focused on the United Nations sustainable development goals, allowing for debate about issues ranging from access to water, to how to safely educate women and children. They represented the nations of Uganda, Ukraine, Norway, and Costa Rica. The few advanced delegates were able to compete in specialized committees, from a Historical League of Nations committee taking place in the year 1922 to the Organization of American States where the delegates discussed problems facing South American nations. Advanced delegates represented the nation of Bolivia, Afghanistan, Armenia, Australia, and Azerbaijan.
The Peninsula delegates performed very well in this first conference, with novices receiving six outstanding awards and eight commendations, along with a Raza Khan taking home a Best Delegate Award. Advanced received three commendations and two Best Delegates from Juliana Yonis and Sydney Bambardekar! This conference was a very successful first conference and shows PEN MUN is poised for a strong year.
Cerritos Model UN Conference: 20 Novices win Awards for Excellence!!
On Saturday, October 8th, Peninsula High's Model United Nations club attended the annual Cerritos Fall conference at Cerritos High School. This conference was headed by the following Secretariat Board Members: Sommer DeRudder, Joey Black, Ricky Negishi, and Erika Hathaway.
The novice committees covered a wide variety of topics from Nuclear Energy Development to Narco-terrorism in the Americas to Poverty Eradication in India. Here our delegates not only learned about the formal MUN process, but also had the opportunity to meet students from other schools who share similar interests. Our delegates represented the countries of Spain and Turkey, who both were able to make salient points on issues in each and every committee. It was a memorable and successful experience for these novices, who were either attending their first or second conference in their young MUN careers.
Our Peninsula delegates performed very well at the Cerritos Conference, with TobiAdeoye, Christina An, Zeke Dee, Zoie Denton, Mathew Doherty, Jade Eng, Laura Jankowski, Sophia Jensen, Laura Kato, Joshua Kim, Charles Liu, Joshua Lu, Sina Moshfeghi, Olin Osborne, Aishani Ramireddy, Aimee Shmitz, John Skoblar, Milana Tatarintseva, Cici Wei, and Elizabeth Zhang all receiving awards for their outstanding performance in committee, totaling 20! Over fifty students attended and engaged with the former Assemblyman, from taking selfies to asking deep political questions about the future of youth in politics. The Historic Debate Club and Strategoi thank Al for sharing his insight with our students.
PEN CELEBRATES TEDDY BEARS
Last Wednesday was National Bring Your Teddy to School Day, and PVPHS Link Crew decided to take that to heart! All Link Crew Leaders brought their own teddies to school, gave out gummi bears to freshmen, and offered bear hugs to those who wanted them! Twelve teddy bears were hidden around campus for students to find and bring to Ms. Dibble for a special prize. All in all, it was a BEAR-y good day!

PRINCIPAL'S ADVISORY COUNCIL (PAC) TACKLES SCHOOL ISSUES
On Tuesday, October 11, eighty members of the Peninsula High Principal's Advisory Council (A) tackled issues of concern. Topics included; wellness, school environment, trash on campus, school spirit, food, and facilities. The energy, enthusiasm and creativity of this group is truly extraordinary. I value the voices of our students and look forward to a very productive year to improve the Peninsula High experience for all students. For two hours, these outstanding leaders brainstormed in collaborative groups and presented their recommendations.
The Peninsula High Advisory Council consists of a Board (12 students), Large Group A (75 students) and Large Group B (75 students). The PAC has doubled in size over the past two years, so students meet as two separate large groups each quarter, and the twelve member board meets twice a month. I value these students who are committed to making Peninsula even better! There is always room for improvement!
