"Heartbreak"

"The Washington Nationals, the Chicago Cubs and Forgiveness"

My heart is broken. I was hoping that the Washington Nationals would break the Washington regions long drought of a sports team not winning a championship. However, last night the Nationals season came to a close as they lost a close game to the LA Dodgers. What was particularly heart wrenching was the fact that the Nationals had the lead as the game was coming to a close. However, they made a couple of glaring gaffs including sending a runner home, when it was clear that he was going to be thrown out.

This drama of losing a game in gut wrenching fashion is nothing new in baseball. Indeed, 12 years ago, as of this writing, the Chicago Cubs lost the National League Championship to the Miami Marlins.  This 2004 baseball series was one of the greatest dramas in baseball history.  This is because after many, many decades of suffering, the Cubs were just a heartbeat away from making it to the World Series. They held a 3-to-1 game lead against the Marlins, were headed back to Chicago and needed just one win to go to the World Series.

However, the Cubs' ticket to the big dance was voided by several improbable events including: two of the best pitchers in baseball losing their handles; a reliable short stop dropping a ball; and a fan blocking a fielder from making a play.  The fan mishap really stuck-out.  It was so egregious that the fan was pelted with beer cans, received death threats, and received police protection around his house following the game.

The good news is that God doesn't treat our sins and failures the same way that Chicago Cubs faithful treated the erstwhile fan.  The bottom line is that all people commit sins and make mistakes (Rom. 3:23). Yet, God is forgiving and kind.  Moreover, God expects us to be forgiving and kind! Indeed, in order for God to forgive us, he requires that we forgive others. This is why the Lord's Prayer says "forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us" (Matthew 6:12). Furthermore, the Apostle Paul said "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" (Eph. 4:32). My prayer is that we'll be kind and forgiving of others today and always!

Peace and Blessings,
Pastor Kip B. Banks, Sr.
