Benj Goehner is an alumni of the UCLA School of Theater, Film, & TV (Professional Program TV Writing '15). When he's not performing standup or developing sitcoms based on his life growing up in a German tourist town, studios pay him to write nice things about their movies. Benj says, "Standup is one of the most challenging and rewarding forms of writing. Essentially, you've only got a few short minutes to make a room full of strangers like you and listen to your stories. It's acting, writing, editing, and a job interview rolled into one, but the reward is instantly knowing when a joke is resonating."
Evangeline Monroy is a film industry vet and two time alumni of the UCLA School of Theater, Film, & TV (BA Theater '98, Professional Program TV Writing '15). After getting laid off from a career producing animated & vfx blockbusters for Sony Pictures, she returned to UCLA to pursue her passion of writing for television, while trying to figure out how to be a professional surf bum. Since graduating, she completed the JVS Womentoring Program as a TV Writing mentee, and was also awarded the Upright Citizens Brigade Diversity Scholarship for Improv & Sketch Writing. Evangeline started performing musical comedy after fellow classmate Benj Goehner recommended a standup workshop taught by comedienne Jodi Miller. Evangeline says, "Doing stand up was a dream I was too scared to admit, but I quickly realized it was the missing element in my arsenal of comedy writing tools. Most importantly it's a fun way to force me to write and use my theater & musical muscles at the same time."

Larry Cedar Stars in Orwellian
|
|
ORWELLIAN, Larry Cedar's (MFA '78) one-hour stage adaptation based on the works of George Orwell will be performed at The Sherry Theater in NOHO on Thursday evenings, October 6, 13, 20, and 27th. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased via Brown Paper Tickets:
ORWELLIAN YouTube Preview: http://bit.ly/ORWELLIANpreview
15 years ago Larry Cedar became obsessed with all things Orwell. After reading every George Orwell novel, short story, and critical essay, he set out to adapt a theatrical distillation that might capture the essence of the writer's thoughts on human nature, politics, and the future of mankind. The result was a one-hour, one-man play entitled, ORWELLIAN: Recollections, Rants, and Cautionary Tales From The Works of Eric Arthur Blair (Orwell's real name).
The piece (which includes samplings from Orwell's seminal works, Down & Out in Paris & London, Animal Farm, and 1984) invokes a variety of characters as they journey through a filthy Parisian kitchen, a revolutionary barnyard, and the dystopian remains of a totalitarian London.
The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER said, "Cedar's tasting menu of Orwell excerpts proffers the flavor of the writer with fresh seasonings. He cannily highlights insights that speak arrestingly to our most immediate contemporary concerns, managing to incarnate both intractable eccentricity and the affectlessness of a true Everyman. Such a talent fits Orwell snugly."
ORWELLIAN made its debut at The Hollywood Fringe Festival, followed by a run at The Odyssey Theater in West LA. After this run at The Sherry Theater, the show moves to New York where it will make its East Coast debut at New York's prestigious United Solo Theatre Festival:
http://unitedsolo.org/us/orwellian-2016/
LARRY CEDAR played opium addicted card dealer Leon for three seasons on HBOs critically acclaimed series Deadwood, and has guest-starred on dozens of other television shows including American Horror Story, Mad Men, Greys Anatomy, Community, House, Terminator, NCIS, Enterprise, Alias, The Closer, Gilmore Girls, and Boston Legal. Feature film appearances include The Crazies, Towelhead, Hollywoodland, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and a starring role in the upcoming independent feature, She Sings to the Stars. Theater credits include the original plays, Discord and Nightmare Alley at The Geffen Playhouse. This is Larry's third one-man production, including Billy Bishop Goes to War and American Fiesta at The Colony Theatre.
