Jim Dow's Paintings on View This Sunday
This Sunday Jim's paintings will be on display on the patio after the 8 a.m. & 10 a.m. services. Jim and Pat Dow have been members of the parish since 1957 and have supported many All Saints initiatives. Jim even s erved as a key leader of our last capital campaign when he attended weekly meetings to oversee the work of the architect and contractor. And he's stepping up again as an accomplished artist and supporter of our current $11.6 million campaign: he's donating several water colors, the proceeds of which will go toward the Sanctuary Preservation & Readiness Project.

"I want to help provide funds for this necessary renovation project," Jim said. "Anyone who buys one of my paintings can write a check to the church with the proceeds going to the capital campaign." The paintings range in cost from $300 to $600, and included is a brand new painting of the Sanctuary with its "original" Bell Tower.

More details to come...but you can get excited now.
Join The All Saints Book Group
Our next All Saints Book Group meets
Monday, September 12 at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish House. We will be discussing
Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger. "A respected mystery writer turns his attention to the biggest mystery of all: God. An award-winning author for his long-running Cork O'Connor series, Krueger aims higher and hits harder with a standalone novel that shares much with his other work...'the awful grace of God,' as it manifests itself within the novel, would try the faith of the most devout believer. Yet, ultimately, the world of this novel is one of redemptive grace and mercy, as well as unidentified corpses and unexplainable tragedy. A novel that transforms narrator and reader alike." (Kirkus Reviews)

Join us for potluck dinner, fellowship and lively discussion. Bring a dish and beverage to share (wine or soda). All are welcome! Please contact Rev. Vicki at vicki@asbts.org for more information.
News from Santa Barbara Foodbank
Food Bank of Santa Barbara County
Dear All Saints:

My name is Leslie Velez and I recently joined the Foodbank and I would like to share some updates about the Foodbank Children's Health Initiative following the generous May 2016 grant awarded by All Saints-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church.

On June 13, 2016, the Foodbank launched Picnic in the Park, a CHI outreach program that offers free, healthy lunches to children in high-need areas of Santa Barbara County at 16 public sites. The Foodbank recognizes that, while summer should be a time of enjoyment, it can be a time of hunger for thousands of children who do not receive the meal assistance (free and reduced-price lunch) that they receive during the school year. In fact, as many as 84% of children in our county who receive free or reduced-priced lunches during the school year don't receive any meal assistance during the summer. That's over 34,000 kids.

At each Picnic in the Park site in Santa Maria, Goleta, Isla Vista, Santa Barbara, and Carpinteria, children up to 18 years old can count on a free lunch and fun enrichment activities Monday through Friday for 10 weeks during the summer months. Foodbank volunteers from each community commit to running local sites for the length of the program. In the roughly two months since the program began, Foodbank volunteers have distributed over 32,000 meals. North County sites continue through August 5, and South County sites serve lunch until August 19.

Many thanks for the
support of All Saints-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church. It has made a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of children.

Godly Play Comes to All Saints!
We are very excited to announce that the Godly Play curriculum is coming to All Saints this fall! This curriculum will be introduced to our Sunday School, grades Pre-K through 5th, when we begin our new Sunday School year on September 18! Godly Play is a unique way of doing Christian Formation. Developed by Jerome Berryman, an Episcopal Priest, Godly Play uses religious language, parable, sacred story, liturgical action, and wondering to help children discover the deep resources of our faith.Out Sunday School teachers and volunteers will be busy throughout August and September with Godly Play training and converting our rooms into Godly Play space. For parents, grandparents, and others interested in learning more about the curriculum and the Godly Play approach, you are welcome to visit one of our two training sessions: August 19 from 6:00 p.m. -9:00 p.m. followed by August 20 and 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or September 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. followed by September 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Our training sessions will be conducted on our campus by the Rev. Carren Sheldon from Holy Trinity in Santa Barbara. If you wish to attend, please contact Rev. Vicki at the church.

Education for Ministry (EFM) to Begin Again
in September
The seminar group is the nucleus of the EFM program. A group of six to twelve participants and a trained mentor meet weekly over the course of a nine-month academic year. Through study, prayer, and reflection, EFM groups move toward a new understanding of the fullness of God's kingdom. Participants are given weekly assignments to study with the help of resource guides. Through discussion and guided reflection, the seminars furnish an opportunity to deepen understanding of the reading materials. By examining their own beliefs and their relationship to our culture and the tradition of our Christian faith, participants can learn what it means to be effective ministers in the world and in coming to terms with the notion that everything we do has potential for manifesting the love of Christ, we discover that our ministry is at hand wherever we turn. An Information Meeting is being planned for September and this date will be publicized soon.

Bell Tower Construction Continues on Schedule
With Special Note

A crane places one of two twin steel cages that will be faced with stone. It was learned during demolition that the spires on our old Bell Tower likely were built following the infamous 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake. That won't be an issue in the future.

--------

Remember:

During the construction we will need to enter and exit the church using the door on the front right hand side of the church (closest to the Parish House) and the Vesting Room door.

You'll also notice some stained glass windows have been boarded up to preserve them in place during construction.

*Special Note:  In preparation for our permit filings, Bob Easton and our structural engineer began preliminary investigations beyond the entrance area. Patching these areas may continue beyond this Sunday.

If you have any questions or concerns about this project, please call the church office (805) 969-4771
Save the Date: Sunday, September 11th

Mary Jo Yaeger and Terry Dodge
Commit to the Capital Campaign
Mary Jo and Terry started attending All Saints in 2012, a few years after their marriage and a few more years after retirement: both from the U.S. Postal Service. She was raised Roman Catholic and he a Baptist.  Mary Jo was the longtime postmaster in Summerland and Terry
currently works part time at Montecito's Read 'n Post.  After participating in Rev. Vicki's confirmation class, Mary Jo was received and Terry was confirmed into The Episcopal Church.

Terry and Mary Jo appreciate their connection to the All Saints community.  As with so many parishioners, they participate in different ways.  Mary Jo is a regular at Bible and Babble and Tuesday morning Eucharist, and serves on the Outreach Committee. Terry recently volunteered as an election worker at St. Michael's in Isla Vista.
