MOPAC Meeting Features State Reps. Leonard and Schor
MOPAC Committee members met with Representatives Tom Leonard (R - Dewitt) and Andy Schor (D - Lansing) to discuss 2016 elections and projections for the future political climate. These Representatives currently have a strong relationship with both MOA CEO Kris Nicholoff and MOA Lobbyist Kevin McKinney.
The Committee also welcomed their newest member, Kevin Beyer, DO. Dr. Beyer completed his first meeting by joining the President's Circle with a $1,000 MOPAC donation.

William Penn, DO, also in attendance, challenged members present to, "dig a little deeper" in order to properly fund the osteopathic advocacy efforts at hand. Among him, Kevin McKinney, Anthony Ognjan, DO and Lawrence Prokop, DO also donated.

In the spring of 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its proposed rule that links Medicare provider payments to quality patient care. This is the first major step taken by the government to implement the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015, also known as MACRA. The MACRA law replaced the Medicare sustainable growth rate, commonly known as "SGR" or the "doc fix." The law fundamentally changes how Medicare pays physicians and other clinicians who participate in the program.
Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) has hosted presentations and seminars for physicians and their staff on what they need to know about MACRA. And what they need to know to get ready. MACRA/MIPS implementation begins in 2017, 2017 performance will determine 2019 CMS payment adjustments.

Great Turnout, Great Weather for MSUCOM SilverFest
The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) once again provided a wonderful homecoming for their alumni. Silverfest Alumni Weekend brings MSUCOM alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends together for a weekend of golf, CME course, tailgating and Spartan football. MSUCOM's Silverfest weekend is an annual highlight and this year's events were blessed with wonderful weather, a great crowd and, outside of a disappointing Spartan football loss, was a glowing success. The MOA was represented by a number of members, among them MOA President Dr. Bruce Wolf. "It's great to support events that in turn support MSUCOM," said Dr. Wolf.

MHA Hosts Live Twitter Chat on Safe Medicine Disposal
October 22, 2016 is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The bi-annual event urges the general public to safely dispose of dated prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.
To raise awareness of the event and the overall goals, the Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA) is hosting a LIVE Twitter Chat on Thursday, Oct. 20, from 12:00-1:00 pm. The event will combine the social media efforts of stakeholders as Tweets will be posted using hashtags associated with the effort. The hashtags include: #MHAHealthChat #TakeBackDay #MedTakeBack

Metro Health University Course on Physician Burnout
Metro Health is partnering with Kent County Osteopathic Association to offer a course dedicated to the issue of Physician Burnout. Through Metro Health University, the course will identify the causes of professional burnout, list symptoms and implement strategies to minimize the impact of stress and avoid burnout.
Metro Health Hospital is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. Metro Health Hospital designates this program for a maximum of 1.5 AOA Category 2-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in the activity.

MSUCOM Honors Two Alumni at AOA Conference
The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine honored two of its graduates - Robert Piccinini, DO, 1992, and Wolfgang Gilliar, DO, 1986, at the American Osteopathic Association's national conference held Sept. 17-20 in Anaheim, California.
Dr. Piccinini was presented with the Dean's Award for Meritorious Contribution. He practices with the Associates in Psychiatry Group in Sterling Heights, Michigan, specializing in psychiatry and internal medicine/geriatrics. He is currently First Vice President of the American Osteopathic Association and has served as president of the Michigan Osteopathic Association, the Michigan Osteopathic Service Corporation and the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists.
His many academic appointments have included regional director and clinical assistant professor for the MSU Department of Psychiatry and faculty for the reproductive system at the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has made 19 major presentations and published a paper in the Journal of the American College of Neuropsychiatrists.
Dr. Gilliar received MSUCOM's 2016 Alumni of the Year Award. He is dean of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and chairman of the board of the New York Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Educational Consortium, comprising nearly 40 health institution members. Gilliar also serves on the board of deans for the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, and the board of trustees for the Associated Medical Schools of New York.
The author of 20 books and chapters, 13 peer-reviewed publications and 41 major abstracts and presentations, Gilliar has lectured worldwide, including in Australia, Germany, Japan, Jordan and Switzerland. He has earned numerous honors and accolades, including the American Osteopathic Foundation Educator of the Year Award, the NYCOM/NYIT Faculty of the Year Award, the NYCOM/NYIT Standard of Excellence Award and the Long Island Business News Top Health Care Professional Award.
Drs. Piccinini and Gilliar were presented with their award plaques by MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine Dean William Strampel.

MOA President Dr. Bruce Wolf Featured in MDHHS Efforts on Flu Shots
The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA), the Michigan Department of Health and Human Service (MDHHS) and the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) have once again partnered to raise awareness on the importance of flu shots. The first week of October is the official start of flu season and the partnership of stakeholders aims to reduce the cases of influenza. The effort includes a joint press release and social media efforts.
"Flu shots are sometimes overlooked and dismissed as unnecessary," said Michigan Osteopathic Association president Bruce Wolf, DO, FAOCR. "But getting vaccinated protects our communities - from infants and children to the elderly and immunocompromised - from the potential risks that accompany the flu virus."

AOAAM Hosts "Essentials of Addiction Medicine"
The
American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine (AOAAM) is hosting a special seminar on addiction medicine. The "Essentials of Addiction Medicine" course will be held on the Michigan State University (MSU) campus. Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) Safe Opioid Task Force member, and AOAAM President, William Morrone, DO, will deliver a presentation on both days.
