Fall 2016

Things are getting a little spooky in the WAMPO region this month, which has us thinking about transportation safety.
Halloween is meant to be scary, but not when it comes to travelling. Did you know that when it comes to drunk driving, Halloween can turn the roads into a horror fest?
Statistics show that Halloween is a particularly deadly night of the year due to drunk drivers. In 2015, over half (52%) of all highway fatalities across the nation on Halloween night involved a driver or a motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or higher. Let's recall that at .08 BAC, your coordination is notably affected, but even at a .05, sedation and slowed reaction time are the key effects on your body.
Please also remember that children out trick-or-treating and the parents accompanying them are also at risk as 19 percent of fatal pedestrian crashes on Halloween night (2009-2013) involved drunk drivers!
Remember, buzzed driving is drunk driving so follow these simple tips to stay safe:
- Plan a safe way to get home before you attend any party. Alcohol impairs judgment, as well as reaction time. If you're drunk you're more likely to choose to drive drunk.
- Designate a sober driver, take public transportation, a car service, or call a friend or family member.
- Walking while impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home.
- Report drunk drivers you see on the road to local law enforcement when it is safe to do so.
- If you see someone you think is about to drive while impaired, intervene and help them get home safely.

Regional Highlight:
The Question of Congestion
|
Wichita scores well in recent congestion study. |
In many places, taking a trip during rush hour means leaving early and planning for the inevitable delay. A recent WAMPO study found that in the Wichita area, these delays only last around 26 seconds due to congestion on an average afternoon commute! When you consider that the average trip takes about 10 minutes start to finish, it's clear that congestion plays a pretty minor role in the WAMPO region.
Curious about the full details of the recent Congestion Management study? Check out our brand new supplement to the MOVE 2040 long-range transportation plan document by clicking here.

2016 Bicycle & Pedestrian Count
|
The 5th Annual Bicycle and Pedestrian Count was held this past September 22nd and 24th.
Each year this event provides a meaningful opportunity for local community members to have direct influence on the transportation decision-making process.
This year, with the help of over 50 volunteers, WAMPO was able to successfully capture
valuable data in estimating the bicycle and pedestrian usage at identified locations around the region.
Without the assistance of these dedicated volunteers this important work would not have been done, so here is a big THANK YOU to those who served!
Check out some of the pictures submitted by our wonderful volunteers below and stay tuned for the event results report!
