It's a BIG move for animal wellbeing.
From NV:  This is finally happening folks on much larger scale- the awareness that animals, whether domestic or wild, should not be used for entertainment. Of course, this focuses on wild animals- but it sure is a step in the right direction. Bravo TripAdvisor!

MY PARENTS FORCED VEGANISM ON ME
Guest Post by Sarina Farb

" Recently, an Italian bill proposed jail time for parents irresponsibly imposing a vegan diet on their children. It has created a lot of buzz and discussion over whether vegan parents should be allowed to "force their values" on their children... The idea that parents shouldn't "force" their ethical and moral beliefs on their children is ridiculous, because society itself is not values-neutral... Then, the default of non-veganism is viewed as "the norm." Big business, industry, and advertisers, create and reinforce this non-vegan norm on a regular basis, and it is anything but values neutral..."  Full Article Here

GMO News:

GMO OMG  director and concerned father Jeremy Seifert is in search of answers. How do GMOs affect our children, the health of our planet, and our freedom of choice? And perhaps the ultimate question, which Seifert tests himself: is it even possible to reject the food system currently in place, or have we lost something we can't gain back?

Recommended Media:

Back in April of 2014 when Northern Vegans was showing the movie Cowspiracy at the Thomas Theater:
On a recent radio show a water expert discusses the serious drought problem in California and how Americans are far too dependent on the many crops that are being grown there for human consumption. He picks on almonds in particular, as California is the largest almond producer in the country. It turn s out that one almond requires one gallon of water. While relying on one part of the country to be the main producer of so many plant crops to feed directly to people is not sustainable, not once did he mention that California is also the largest dairy producer in the country as well as one of the largest beef producers- and that livestock production requires an exorbitant amount more water than plant agriculture. And plants don't poop or carry foodborne illnesses either! To compare the same amount of water- 660 gallons- that goes into one single hamburger (over 70% of hamburgers come from dairy cows) to almonds- farmers could yield 660 almonds! What is more efficient (and requires far less land)- providing 660 almonds to feed to people or one hamburger? I think we can safely say that this radio discussion of water usage in California and how it left the topic of animal agriculture completely out of the equation is what many people may refer to as--- Cowspiracy.
More info on this very subject about water consumption and diet check out Truth or Drought's Facebook page at:  https://www.facebook.com/truthordrought/

Quote for this issue:
"Isn't man an amazing animal? He kills wildlife - birds, kangaroos, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice, foxes and dingoes - by the million in order to protect his domestic animals and their feed. Then he kills domestic animals by the billion and eats them. This in turn kills man by the millions, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative - and fatal - health conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer. So then man tortures and kills millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, some people are dying of sad laughter at the absurdity of man, who kills so easily and so violently, and once a year, sends out cards praying for Peace on Earth."   David Coats

Donation

Please consider making a donation to Northern Vegans this holiday season
Northern Vegans is always in need of donations to continue our great work in the community.  As most of you know, not only are we a not for profit group with no paid employees, but we also often fund our group with our personal funds as board members.  Northern Vegans has existed since 2006 and a short list of our accomplishments in the community include: library donations of vegan related books and media numbering in the hundreds; dozens of movie/documentary showings; over a hundred restaurant meet ups and other socials; numerous vegan presentations; countless tabling events; immense amount of vegan literature dispersed; and the list really goes on and on.

Help us continue spreading the message and consider donating to us today.  No amount is too small and we use every bit of it to our fullest extent.  In fact it is not outlandish to say that for every $1.00 that is donated we put at least 50 cents more into that $1.00 simply because we work on a 100% volunteer basis, no salaries, and several of us continuously put our own personal money into the necessary expenses for the group.

Please send donations to:

Northern Vegans

THANK YOU!

Northern Vegans Donates to the Dickinson County Library

Northern Vegans Donates Vegan Related DVDs and Book to Dickinson County Library. Thank you Anda for helping facilitate this!

Vegan group donates books
by Anda Zile

VEGAN BOOKS AND DVDS AT LIBRARY
On September 6th the Dickinson County Library received a donation of materials from Northern Vegans, a non-profit based in the Upper Peninsula. The materials will supplement the Library's existing selection of books and DVDs dealing with the subject of veganism. The donated items are Why I Will Always Be Vegan, a book of essays, and four documentaries on DVD: Plant Pure Nation,Cowspiracy, Speciesism, and Peaceable Kingdom.

Over the decades, the definition of veganism has grown to encompass more than simply "abstention from or avoidance of all foods or other products of animal origin."(Oxford English Dictionary) To paraphrase a definition provided by the book Why I Will Always Be Vegan, veganism is also about treating animals with respect and justice, and not using or exploiting animals for human purposes.

Most people are first exposed to veganism via the vegan diet, which is a plant-based diet. They may seek out such a diet for health reasons, while others do so because of animal welfare, environmental, or political concerns. According to Megan Buck, Library Director, the Dickinson County Library has approximately 20 vegan cookbooks, even one for children.

For those looking to learn more about the ethics of veganism, the Library currently houses more than a dozen books under the subject headings "animals+ethics,""animals+ rights," and "animals+welfare. One will also find the DVD of the popular documentary Forks Over Knives.

Although most of the vegan collection is located at the Main Branch in Iron Mountain, Ms. Buck says that materials are easily shared with its Norway and North Dickinson Branches. "And, as far as getting new items for the Library, we are always open to suggestions from Library patrons." The Dickinson County Library also participates in a loan program with libraries outside of the county.

Northern Vegans can similarly serve as a resource for those interested in veganism. The organization meets monthly for a vegan dinner, has an on-line newsletter, holds informational events, arranges screenings of films and, with funds provided by its members, purchases and donates materials to U.P. libraries. An annual highlight is the Thanksgiving Potluck, which is well-received by vegans and non-vegans alike.

"Like many, I am not comfortable with the label 'vegan' or 'non-vegan'," says Northern Vegans member Anda Zile."That feels too 'all-or-nothing.'  I am trying to be more conscious about the choices I make in my life, and I find information and support within the Northern Vegans group. They welcome me no matter where I am with my veganism."

For more information about the Dickinson County Library and Northern Vegans, visit their websites at www.dcl-lib.org and www.northernvegans.com.
