AB 2757 Defeated in Assembly; Vote Garners Media Attention
AB 2757 by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), a bill that
would have eliminated the agricultural overtime exemption of 10 hours per day/60 hours per week overtime requirement for agricultural workers, failed to pass the Assembly floor with a vote of 38-35 with seven members abstaining. It needed 41 "yes" votes to advance from the Assembly to the Senate (

). CAWG thanks all of the members who lobbied at the Capitol against the bill and/or contacted their state legislators in opposition to the bill.

New Program Chair Selected for 2017 Unified Wine & Grape Symposium
Lise Asimont, director of grower relations for Francis Ford Coppola Presents, has been named chair of the 2017 Unified Wine & Grape Symposium Program Development Committee. The selection was made by the Unified Symposium's LLC Managing Committee, representing CAWG and the American Society for Enology and Viticulture
,
which have co-hosted Unified for more than 20 years. Assisting Asimont in developing the 2017 program will be nearly 30 other leaders from the wine and grape industry, who will all work from now and throughout the summer to combine topics and speakers for the Unified Symposium program sessions. The 2017 symposium will be Jan. 24-26 in Sacramento.

California State Fair Announces Commercial Wine Competition Winners
Congratulations to CAWG members that were winners of the 2016 California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition. Fifty-five judges spent three days tasting 2,854 wines from more than 750 California wineries. Only wines made with fruit grown in California are judged in the competition. Wines are evaluated by class, varietal, style and region based upon the source of the grapes.

Hackathon! Growers Join Software Designers to Design Apps for Ag
Do you have a brilliant idea for a mobile app that would help winegrape growers? You might be able to turn your idea into a real problem solver. The California Apps for Ag event will be held July 15-17. The competitive "hackathon" is being hosted by UC Agriculture and Natural Resources and the California State Fair. Growers and others in the agricultural industry are invited to join software developers, designers and entrepreneurs at the event. It will be held at the UCANR building at 2801 Second Street in Davis, from 8 a.m. Friday, July 15 to 11 a.m. Sunday, July 17. Participants will compete for cash prizes at a "pitchfest" in front of a live audience at the California State Fair on July 17, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top three apps: $5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second, and $1,500 for third.

2016 GEELA Awards Seeking Nominations
The Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) is California's highest environmental honor. The program recognizes individuals, organizations and businesses that have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made notable contributions in conserving California's resources, protecting and enhancing our environment, building public-private partnerships and strengthening the state's economy. Applications are being accepted through July 29. Award recipients will be chosen from five categories: 1) climate change, 2) ecosystem and land use stewardship, 3) environmental education, 4) sustainable practices, communities or facilities, and 5) waste reduction. The awards program is administered by the California Environmental Protection Agency, in partnership with several agencies, including CDFA.

Statewide Water Conservation Increased to 26.1 Percent in April
According to the State Water Resources Control Board, Californians have saved more than 1.43 million acre-feet of water (466.3 million gallons) from June 2015 through April 2016, a 24.1 percent reduction in water use compared to the same months in 2013. Water saved collectively by the state's large urban water suppliers remained strong in April. Savings increased from 24.3 percent in March to 26.1 percent for April, compared to the same months in 2013. Still, officials urged Californians to continue conservation efforts. Despite near average rainfall in much of Northern California this past winter, 60 percent of the state remains in severe drought. Groundwater basins and many reservoirs are badly depleted as the state's drought enters into a fifth year.

State Water Board Expands Commitment to Recycled Water with New Permit Process
The State Water Resources Control Board has approved a new general order to simplify the permitting process for recycled water projects, advancing the state's goal of increasing recycled water use statewide. This new order will encourage more recycled water projects by providing a single permit that can be used across Regional Water Quality Control Board boundaries. The order applies to the use of treated municipal wastewater for irrigating landscapes and crops; dust control; industrial and commercial cooling; and other uses.

California Drought Monitor Available Online
The U.S. Drought Monitor features weekly maps of drought conditions that are produced jointly by USDA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Drought Mitigation Center. The maps are based on measurements of climatic, hydrologic and soil conditions, as well as reported impacts and observations from more than 350 contributors nationwide. Maps are accompanied by a text summary of drought conditions. View the June 9 drought monitor for California via link.

Groundbreaking Event for Wine Learning Center at Sonoma State
Hundreds of guests from the wine industry, government and education gathered for the groundbreaking of Sonoma State University's Wine Spectator Learning Center on June 1. The $9.15 million, 15,000-square-foot facility - scheduled to open in summer 2017 - will feature three state-of-the-art classrooms and an industry center for meetings between students, academics and business professionals.
"This is a huge day for Sonoma State and the entire wine community," said Rep. Mike Thompson, who noted that the wine industry annually contributes $62 billion to California's economy and $13 billion to the Sonoma County economy.
