Faith through Life...Life through Faith
Renee & Neil Hansen
We grew up living a block away from each other in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. Although a grade apart in school, we went to the same grade school, church and finally high school. We both attended Sunday School and were confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. Fifty four years ago, as a result of a Youth Group week-end camp-out in Lake Geneva, we had our first date. Five years later, the same pastor that confirmed us both, married us. Faith and the church have been part of our lives as long as we can remember.
We have been members of Edgebrook Lutheran Church since the early 70's, and raised our three children here. Our membership can probably be best described as friendship, service and love for God. Many of our friendships have developed as a result of service here, Sunday School, Youth mentorship, choir, serving at the many events held at ELC through the years, driving people to and from events or worship service and serving at worship services. God has blessed our lives so richly, we hope that our faith response to God has blessed the lives of others as well.

Lutheran Disaster Response |
Hurricane Matthew
(From the ELCA Website)
The situation:
Hurricane Matthew, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in years, hit Haiti, Cuba and Jamaica with heavy rain and dangerous winds. Landslides occurred in the Dominican Republic due to heavy rain as well. The Bahamas are in the hurricane's path, and it could make landfall on the east coast of the United States. The National Hurricane Center has reported Hurricane Matthew to be "extremely dangerous" with conditions favorable for it to maintain its strength.
Our response:
Your support through Lutheran Disaster Response will bring God's hope and healing to those affected by this hurricane. Where the hurricane has already hit the hardest in Haiti, Lutheran Disaster Response's trusted partner is already there with relief material. Our response is spanning across several countries, especially Haiti and Cuba. In the U.S., Lutheran Disaster Response coordinators are collaborating with local community leaders, civic organizations, ecumenical partners and officials to begin planning the proper responses. Together, we will work with congregations, synods, trusted partners and companion churches in the area that know the communities well and will walk with people on the road to recovery.
What you can do:
Pray
Please pray for the people who have been affected and are in the path of Hurricane Matthew. May God's healing presence give them peace and hope in their time of need.
Give
Gifts to
"Hurricane Matthew"
will be used to assist those affected by the hurricane until the response is complete.

Families Helping Families |
With the season of Thanksgiving upon us, the children and
families
of Sunday School will be participating in a charity challenge. It is called
Families
Helping
Families
. From 10/29 through 11/13, we will be accepting money from the children that will be used to provide a prepared Thanksgiving meal to 3-4
families
in our community who would otherwise be unable to have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. This is a great way to teach our children about giving,
helping
those in need and being thankful for what we have. We will have a large poster board of a Thanksgiving dinner displayed in the common area of the classrooms that we will utilize to measure our progress. Let's
help
other
families
enjoy the Thanksgiving season with a delicious Thanksgiving meal. We will have a special collection container for this project, as well as one for the congregation. I hope you will join us in this important endeavor.

ELC will celebrate with children of any age who have, with the guidance and blessing of their family, chosen to take part in a celebration of their First Communion at one of the services on November 6, 2016. Please let your child's Sunday School teacher know if you would like your child to participate in Communion for the first time on November 6 and which service they will be attending that day.
Should this date not work for your family, please contact Pastor Joe via the church office at 773-763-2121 to arrange an alternate date to have your child take their First Communion.
We will have a special coffee hour between services to celebrate the children who are taking their first communion.

CCL is looking for a couple of volunteers to take over leading this wonderful event in 2017. Come work along side us this year and see how much fun it is! This is such a great opportunity to volunteer for our church, youth, and community. It is a fun event that does not take a lot of time (really just a few days - that's all). Please think about leading next year. Contact Liz McChesney at
[email protected] or Becky Hennessy at
[email protected] for details and more information.
For this year's CCL, please mark down Sunday, November 27th. We need leaders, shoppers, wrappers, set up, check in, cashiers and of course Elves!
Thank you and it is such a fun day - you'll want to be involved!

"Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth, sing praise to the Lord" (Psalm 68:32)
Do you sing along with the hymns on Sunday? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be part of the choir? Between our weekly services and special programs, the choirs are critically important to the spiritual life of ELC. Yet, the choirs cannot exist without volunteers. We invite each and every interested person to our choir practices. Chancel choir practice is held on Tuesdays from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in the Music Room. Come see the joy and fun that choir has to offer, and get a taste of the beautiful music we can make together! No experience is necessary - just a love of worshiping God through music!!
