For anyone involved in Boy Scouts, the pinnacle of achievement is to be awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. It requires sustained and diligent work to earn the many required merit badges and the completion of a major community service project. Less than 2% of the boys who enter Boy Scouts obtain the rank of Eagle.
Lakehill is proud to recognize five Upper School Scouts from Troop 42 who have recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout: Freshmen Connor Alexander, Ben Gillman, Greg Gillman, and Ben Palmer, and senior William Skipworth.
Alexander, Gillman, Gillman, and Palmer spent five years in Lakehill's Cub Scout Pack 46, earning their Arrow of Light before joining Boy Scout Troop 42 in January of 2012. They later became members of the Order of the Arrow,
Scouting's Honor Society.
As part of their path to Eagle Scout, each boy planned and executed a community service project.
Alexander organized a donation drive, going door-to-door in Lakewood to collect blankets and jeans for downtown Dallas's Austin Street Center, which serves over 400 homeless men and women every day.
Ben Gillman completed a "mud kitchen" and cleaned up the play area for the children of Vogel Alcove, a
day school and resource center for homeless children.
Greg Gillman cleared a wilderness trail to be enjoyed by the children of Jonathan's Place
which provides a home for seriously abused and neglected children. Palmer constructed a new trail for Lower School students at Lakehill's Environmental Science Center.
Skipworth built a small indoor herb garden for senior citizens at The Brady Center to provide meaningful activities for them.
The Court of Honor for Alexander was held May 30, while Skipworth received his rank on August 14. The Gillmans and Palmer were honored on September 11.
Congratulations to these five young men on receiving Scouting's highest honor.

Fire Department Visits Kindergarten Classes
Members of the Dallas Fire Department paid a special visit to talk to Lakehill's kindergarten classes about smoke detectors, how to get out of a house that is on fire, when and how to call 9-1-1, and how to stop, drop, and roll. Students enjoyed walking through the fire truck and seeing the firemen dressed in their full gear while learning more about fire safety.
Middle School Student Council Elects Officers
Middle School Student Council recently elected its officers for the 2016-17 school year.
Officers are Asher Chamoy, President; Keegan Clendenin, Vice-President; Sarah Smith, Secretary/Treasurer; and Noah Kohn, Publicity Chairman.
Students Celebrate Mexico's Independence Day
Señora Wilkin's sixth-grade Spanish classes enjoyed the delicious food of Mexico at Matt's Rancho Martínez Restaurant in Lakewood on September 16, in honor of
Mexico's Independence Day. They also sang a favorite Mexican song "Las chiapanecas."
Tribes
On September 15, the first Tribe meeting of the new school year was held. Tribes are groupings of students of various age groups that meet monthly to build bonds between the grades. Students shared tasty treats and made wreaths. Each student wrote on paper hearts one thing they loved about Lakehill and on paper hands one thing that they looked forward to at Lakehill. "It was fun to get to know students who are not in high school," said new Computer Science Chair Jennifer Herta, "It was exciting to have everyone under one roof." The next tribe meeting will be held October 13.

Kindergarten students are learning about animal communication by making scent trails to follow. They will also observe ants following scent trails in the woods.
First graders learned about bird feathers. They observed feathers using magnifying lenses and macroscopes to see their structures up close. Dripping water on the feathers taught the students about how waterproof the feathers are. A bird-watching hike through the forest ended this unit of study.
Second grade learned about beetles by studying the life cycle of lady bugs, as well as their diet, defenses, and homes. The classes released a vial of live ladybugs into the third grade garden to protect from pests. Many of the students were able to catch and release damselflies by the ESC stream during an insect-collection hike.
Third grade planted bean seeds and cabbage plants in the Little Sprouts Garden. They also collected native wildflower seeds during a hike that will be planted around the ESC.
Fourth grade focused on how foresters observe and measure trees. They planted avocado seeds which they will observe on their subsequent trips to the ESC. They also took a hike where they discovered wild cucumber plants.
Fifth grade studied the basics of soil science, collecting a soil sample which will be observed and tested on subsequent trips to the ESC.
The water cycle was the focus of sixth grade. They played the role of a water drop that moved to new places in the water cycle based on the roll of a die.
Seventh grade worked with GPS units in order to map the coordinates of trees around the ESC. They will use these skills as they identify and map trees on their next visits to the ESC.
Eighth grade observed the transformation of energy using hot and cold light sticks, apple batteries, and even a battery made of watery mud.

Update from Headmaster Roger Perry

The basement floor was partially completed this week and the remainder will be poured next week.
The fence pillars on the north side of the faculty parking lot should have the brick completed today with the stone tops and iron being completed late next week. The thirty-one pillars that will support the new building on the west side will be poured at the end of next week.
The project continues to progress on schedule.

Lakehill Welcomes Haley James
|
|
|
Haley James joins the Lakehill faculty this year, teaching
first grade.
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, James attended the historic Little Rock Central High School and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where she obtained a Bachelor's of Science and a Master's of Arts in Early Childhood Education. She completed a full year of student teaching in Kindergarten, second, and fourth grade.
Now in her third year of teaching, James previously taught first grade at Richland Elementary in Richardson. She was drawn to Lakehill for its inclusive community.
James is
engaged to her college sweetheart Andrew. In her spare time, she enjoys walking her dog, baking desserts, and practicing yoga. "I am also very busy planning my upcoming wedding in April," she said.
James works in education because children inspire her. "As grown ups, we get so lost in our worlds of deadlines and bills; children have the unique ability to help us reconnect with our own inner child and see the world again with hope and creativity."
She is most passionate about equality for all people. "It is my hope that I can further that goal through education and encouraging social awareness in my students."
"I learned from my mentor that it is important to teach from the heart. It is acceptable to make a mistake in front of your students. What matters is that you have genuine connections with students and parents. They will forgive you for your humanity when they know you're teaching with your heart and soul."

National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates

In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:
NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Noah Bernstein
Noah Bernstein has attended Lakehill for 13 years, since kindergarten with Mrs. Burt. He has been involved in many facets of school life. Noah has an amazing love of film, watching about 300 movies per year, and was President of the Film Society for three years of Upper School. Noah is also very athletic, and has played varsity basketball for four years, as well as soccer, earning district honors as a goalkeeper. In Lower and Middle school, he was an active member of Magic: The Gathering Club, even aiding Mr. Trout during summer camps during high school.
His favorite classes have been Drama and Musical Theater with Mr. Herron and Mr. Guerra, Chemistry with Mr. Holman, and English with Mr. Hagood.
Noah has 13 years of Lakehill memories, and finds it hard to pick just one. He says though, "as lame as it is," that his favorite memories are times with his friends. It has been amazing to him to see the transition that he and fellow classmates have gone through over the years.
His advice to younger Warriors: "Your teachers really are your greatest resource and your best friends.... because they can make or break you." He also says to avoid feeling embarrassed. "Never be embarrassed," he says, "because embarrassment is not a real emotion."
Noah's work extends beyond the classroom as well. He volunteered for many years at Dolphin Heights Elementary as a tutor. He also enjoys volunteering with Community Partners of Dallas and the North Texas Food Bank. Not all of his outside work has been as a volunteer. He held a position in data entry at Legal Aid at Northwest Texas in downtown Dallas, working with a pro bono lawyers' association.
He hopes to attend Washington University of St. Louis, Northwestern University, or Macalester College in Minneapolis. He will major in finance and film production, hoping to work in the business side of the film industry.

Warriors Keep Full Schedule in Volleyball, Football

Varsity and JV Volleyball
The JV and Varsity Volleyball teams both had strong performances this past week with district wins over Yavneh on September 15, and Dallas Covenant on September 20.
The JV team dominated Yavneh from the beginning and won in straight sets (25-7; 25-10).
Macy Ellis led the team with 14 aces while
Lynley Waggoner led the team in kills with three. The team faced a tougher challenge playing Dallas Covenant on the road. It was hard fought three-set battle, but the Lady Warriors pulled off a big comeback victory after losing the first set (18-25; 25-14; 20-18). Waggoner once again led in kills while
Ashley Peacock led in assists.
The Varsity team won in convincing fashion over Yavneh in straight sets (25-5; 25-4; 25-6). The team also beat Covenant in straight sets (25-18; 25-19; 25-10).
Kelly Carlson led the team in kills with 13, and
Claire Crow finished with 26 assists and five aces.
The team faces a tough district match on Thursday, September 22, against the visiting Rockwall Heritage Christian Academy. JV plays at 5:30 p.m. and Varsity at 6:30 p.m.
Middle School Volleyball
The seventh grade lost to a tough eighth grade team from Akiba on September 15, while t
he Lakehill eighth grade team had a nail-bitter match against Zion Lutheran. Zion won the first game 25-21; Lakehill won the second game, 25-15; and then Zion pushed past to win 15-10. The team played their best match of the season with strong serving by Kathryn Mahan and Maddie Cerda. Hayden Yoss had an excellent overall game.
September 20 provided an exciting afternoon of volleyball at the Covenant School as the eighth grade team won in a close match (19-25; 25-22; 15-9). Coach K praised Yoss, Cerda, and
Jourdyn Owens for strong serves and Mahan and
Sarah Smith for excellent court play. The seventh graders lost to a tough team, but played well in a close game.
Lakehill traveled to McKinney last Friday to take on Cornerstone Christian in a battle of the Warriors. What ensued was one of the more memorable games in Lakehill football history.
The first half was a defensive battle between both squads, with Lakehill making a couple of strong goal-line stands to preserve a 12-8 halftime lead. The offenses opened up in the second half with numerous lead changes. Cornerstone took a 44-38 lead with less than four minutes left in the game, but Lakehill steadily marched back down the field. Senior
Griffin Burt's short run tied the game at 44-44 with a minute left. However, Lakehill's attempt to take the lead failed when senior
Brandon Bartholow was tackled just short of the goal-line on the conversion attempt. Cornerstone rapidly marched to the Lakehill 20-yard line after the ensuing kick-off, but once again the defense rose to the occasion and held them out of the end zone, forcing overtime.
Cornerstone scored on the first play of their possession to quickly take a 50-44 lead. On their conversion kick, freshman
Gaige McKnight and several others broke through the line and blocked the kick, changing the momentum of the game. Lakehill wasted no time on offense, scoring in five plays to tie the game at 50-50. Bartholow plowed into the end zone for the winning conversion attempt as the Lakehill players stormed the field after the 51-50 victory. (

The win was a great team effort. Bartholow and Burt each set personal bests rushing: Bartholow rushing for 390 yards and six touchdowns (breaking his own school record set one week earlier), and Burt rushing for 81 yards and two touchdowns. The defense was led by junior
Warren Lester, and got strong contributions from two freshmen -
Jonah Shaw and
Harrison Lankford.
"This was an unbelievable team effort," said Head Coach Chris Peacock. "We're still not at full-strength, still have some guys out with injuries, but everyone just kept battling, wouldn't give up. A number of younger guys stepped in for us and helped make plays to win the game. Just amazing." Lakehill is now 2-2 and will travel cross town to play old district foe Tyler Street Christian on
Friday, September 23. Kickoff will be early at 4:30 p.m.
The Lakehill Warriors Middle School Football team improved to two wins and one loss with a 26-20 victory on the road on September 15, against Irving Universal.
With the score tied 20-20 and just over three minutes left to play,
Nathan Lewis threw a pass to
Christian Barefoot who lateraled it to
Ryan Henry who ran down the sideline for the winning touchdown.
Henry scored three touchdowns and made a game-saving tackle to prevent another.
Andrew Ward added a touchdown and had a solid game on defense.
The Warriors travel to First Baptist Academy
on September 22, to play the Saints at
4:30 p.m.
