Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!
This Sunday is the Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost.
Rev. Ellen will celebrate and preach.
We look forward to seeing you in church!

The Season after Pentecost
The Season After Pentecost is essentially the part of the year that is left over after everything has been accounted for. The name of this season varies widely from church to church-it can be called Kingdomtide, Dominiontide, or Ordinary Time. In most churches, the general theme of the Bible readings and sermons concerns the church's mission in the world.
The Season After Pentecost begins on the day after Pentecost. In the western Church, it ends on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent.

From Rev. Ellen
Living Generously
I'm hoping by Saturday you will have received your 2017 Stewardship packet. In the packet you will find a letter from the Rector, an Aspirational Budget, and a pledge card. During the next five weeks we will have parishioners give stewardship minutes at the announcement time. Apologies- o
wing to the excitement for the start of Stewardship Campaign, we forgot to sign the letter!
Then on November 20th at 11am
we will have a grand party celebrating our Stewardship Campaign and to put into practice living generously. I hope you all join us!
This is an exciting time at Emmanuel. The truth is we need every single person's time, talent and treasure to be the church God has called us to be. I invite you this year to our prayerful, life giving, and joyous Stewardship Campaign "Living Generously!"
Blessings, Ellen+

Intercessory Prayer Station
Many of you saw the end result of our "Plug into the Power of Prayer" series in this Intercessory Prayer Station. While there can be many interpretations, one I would like to endorse is that we are like that net; connected to one another and connected to Christ, and when we offer prayer together it amplifies its energy and power.
This station will remain up for a few more Sundays. I invite you to use it in your own prayer life. If there is someone or something you need to pray for, take a fish from the basket and on the back write a sign of your prayer and clip it onto the net. In this way the power of your prayer will not only be heard but also seen.
I hope you find this visual of prayer both helpful and inspiring. Ellen+

- All Saints Cloister & Brown Bin at Woodland entrance (24/7)
- Village True Value Hardware Store
- The Theater of Western Springs during business/box office hours
- Emmanuel Episcopal Church in the glass hallway!
WHAT CAN I DO?
- Help us cast our net wide by asking your neighbors, friends and work colleagues to make donations as they purge and clean out their closets.
- Closets empty? Go to Goodwill and purchase items to support two good causes!

Chair Yoga
This class will be led by Theresa Mikuls, a CYT certified Yoga Instructor. It is ideal for students with limited mobility, seniors, and those recovering from injuries. A slower pace and the use of chairs/props helps make beneficial stretching more accessible.
Theresa
adds breathing and meditation techniques to calm the mind and body.

Saint of the Week:
Saint Luke the Evangelist
Feast Day: October 8
Saint Luke is one of the four authors traditionally credited with writing the four Gospels. The early church fathers believed he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles, which would mean he wrote even more of the New Testament than Saint Paul.
Many scholars believe that he was a Greek physician who lived in the city of Antioch in present-day Turkey, although others think he was a Hellenized Jew. Although Luke never claims to have been an eyewitness to Jesus' ministry, the Acts of the Apostles do contain evidence that he knew and traveled with Saint Paul. He seems to have been with him near the end of Paul's life, since Paul writes in his second letter to Saint Timothy, "Only Luke is with me."
Luke's Gospel differs from the other three in several ways. He mentions six miracles and eighteen parables not found in the other Gospels. Only Luke mentions the angel's Annunciation to Mary that she would become the mother of the son of God, and her visit to Saint Elizabeth where she makes the statement we call the Magnificat. He emphasizes Jesus' ministry to the poor and to sinners more than the other Gospel writers.
It is unclear what happened to Saint Luke after Saint Paul's death. Some traditions hold that he was martyred, others that he lived to a ripe old age. Whatever happened, Saint Luke will always be remembered as the Apostle to the Gentiles, and for his sympathy for the poor and unfortunate.
