What's in the Marion County Transit Plan?
The Marion County Transit Plan proposes a 70% increase in IndyGo service and features shorter waits, longer hours, more efficient transfers, and every route every day. In addition, rapid transit lines would be built and operational. So far we've discussed every route, every day and shorter waits.
More Efficient Transfers
The Marion County Transit Plan proposes some routes in a grid system to make transfers easier and more efficient for many people. Today's system is a "hub & spoke" style, meaning that most routes go from the edges of the county to downtown Indianapolis. Everyone has to transfer downtown, regardless of their final destination, so naturally trips take longer than if they were more direct.

More cross-town routes make it easier, and faster for people to change buses - no need to go downtown. And if they are transferring between two frequent routes (buses come every 15 minutes or sooner), it means a lot less waiting.

Check out this zoomed in 2021 proposed map of Indy's east side to see how the routes would be organized in a grid, making it easier for many people to go in the direction that they want, rather than always going downtown first. (Click the image for a larger map.) The red lines on the map show frequent routes.
  • The colors represent how often buses come.
    • Red: bus comes every 15 minutes or better
    • Blue: bus comes every 30 minutes
    • Green: bus comes once every hour

The November 8 ballot question on transit is advisory. If the measure passes, the Indianapolis City-County Council will decide whether to enable the transit tax and at what rate (between 0.1% and 0.25%). The Marion County Transit Plan as proposed assumes a 0.25% income tax rate.
