UP Steam Locomotive Union Pacific Train Stop October 27th -
Union Pacific Railroad's Famed Steam Locomotive, No. 844, Will Make Stop in Osawatomie on October 27th!

There will be quite a "free show" at the railroad grade crossing on Main Street in Osawatomie on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, The Union Pacific Railroad will be sending its famed steam locomotive, No. 844, to town from the south. The engine's visit will include a scheduled 15-minute stopover from noon until 12:15 p.m.  The train could run a few minutes early, so interested persons should be gathered in the vicinity of the Main Street crossing at least 15 to 20 minutes prior to noon.

Behind the large steam engine, fuel oil tender and a water car, will be four crew support cars. There will be no passenger cars in the short train consist.

Engine No. 844 was the last steam locomotive to be manufactured for the U.P. line. It was built in 1944. The engine has been out of service for the past three years for an extensive rebuild and restoration. It is now only making its second major round-trip since being put back in service a couple of months ago.

The public will not be allowed to climb onto the engine for a close look in the cab. Only pictures from a safe distance will be allowed. The 15-minute stopover is designed to allow for plenty of picture taking by spectators.  There will be extra law enforcement security in the vicinity of the Main Street crossing to handle the extra pedestrians and motor vehicle traffic. All persons walking near the railroad tracks are advised to stay safe and keep young children from running or straying away.

Engine No. 844 and its consist are on a 19-day public relations tour that began at Cheyenne, Wyo., and has gone as far as Memphis, Tenn. The special train went eastbound from Kansas City to St. Louis  before traveling a southern route to Memphis. The train's return to Kansas City is via the U.P.'s Coffeyville Sub. route, which wll take the train through Garnett, Greeley, Lane, Osawatomie and Paola. The special trip has been billed as the "Trek to Tennesee" by the U.P.

Locomotive No. 844 has its own specialized crew but at least a couple of regular Coffeyville Subdivision employees will be on board to serve as "pilots" to provide assistance with signals, speed limits and other track matters during the overall trip.
