James Madison University Programs

University Programs at James Madison University is the central location for students, faculty and the university community to receive services and support regarding the Center for Assessment and Research Studies, General Education Program, Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies (IdLS), the Honors Program and University Advising. University Programs is the Dean's office for Undeclared students, and coordinates some university-wide academic projects, including the Honor Code Test and the registration of new freshmen and transfer students into appropriate first-semester courses. Within University Programs, the Center for Assessment and Research Studies provides quality assessment service to the university while providing applied graduate training in both assessment and measurement. The General Education Program is the core academic program required of all students, regardless of their major, educating students in ways that have been fundamental to higher education and to thinking people for centuries. IdLS is a liberal arts and sciences major that is cooperatively produced by three different colleges (Arts and Letters, Integrated Science and Engineering, and Education). The IdLS major provides content-area education for future teachers, and is designed to prepare students to meet subject area competencies required for teacher licensure in Virginia. The Honors Program seeks to meet the educational needs of talented, highly motivated students by offering increased opportunities for an enriched and demanding curriculum. University Advising focuses on the implementation of advising practices across the majors.

This year's Connections2016 is scheduled the week after Election Day, so the information is both timely and important.  Dr. Chmura spoke at Connections five years ago to one of the largest crowds we have seen and we expect a good turnout as well this year.  It will be the biggest Business-After-Hours of the year and a great marketing opportunity for a few lucky sponsors!

The SVTC's FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Team Sponsorship application has been posted
SVTC will cover HALF the start-up cost for a NEW SHENANDOAH VALLEY TEAM!

As you probably know, we care about STEM activities and projects that lead to STEM-field careers -- and for that reason we will again support three new Shen. Valley FIRST  Lego League (FLL) teams with a sponsorship that reimburses approx. half of their start-up cost. Last year, one of them fared so well at the regional, and then the state competition, that they went on to compete at the world festival in St. Louis in April. We are very proud of these guys and their coaches and mentors.

WHAT SHENANDOAH VALLEY TEAM WILL BE NEXT????

WHAT is FLL?
FIRST Lego League (FLL) was created through a partnership between FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and the LEGO company, and inspires future scientists and engineers.

FLL  Introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.

Elementary and middle-school students get to:
  •   Design, build, test and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology
  •   Apply real-world math and science concepts
  •   Research challenges facing today's scientists
  •   Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills
  •   Participate in tournaments and celebrations
Considering starting a team?  Technical or technology experience or background  NOT REQUIRED! (And team members can come from any setting, not just school-based.)
