MORAH STACEY GOLDMAN
TANACH

For most of the parent body at Kohelet Yeshiva (myself included), our children are learning more Torah than we ever imagined possible when we were their age.  By sending them to Jewish day school we are in essence fulfilling a modern day version of the mitzvah of Hakhel, in which men, women, and young children are all commanded to assemble and hear the Torah read by the Jewish king.  It is understandable that men and women would need to hear this recitation, but why must the children, especially the  taf, unimpressionable infants, be present?  The Talmud brings an endearing story about Rabbi Yehoshua who asks his visiting students what new Torah they have learned. They reply, "We are your students and drink of your waters. We learn from you, our teacher." He responds, "Something new is always taught in the Beit Hamidrash. Share with me what you learned." The students share the mitzvah of Hakhel with Rabbi Yehoshua and explain that the children are included in the Mitzvah of Hakhel to bring reward to the parents who brought them. When Rabbi Yehoshua hears this he exclaims, "You had such a wonderful pearl and you wanted me to lose it?" In other words, a teacher can learn from his students and vice versa. The Meshech Chochmah relates Rabbi Yehoshua's response to a different Gemara in the Yerushalmi where we learn that his own mother used to take him in his stroller to  the synagogue so that the Torah would cling to him, just as he hoped the Torah of his students would cling to him.

Despite being a great Torah scholar himself, Rabbi Yehoshua wanted nothing more than to learn from his students. Whether you have been learning Torah since you were a baby like Rabbi Yehoshua, or began your Jewish education as an adult like me, take the time during this holiday season to learn from your children. Don't let them withhold any pearls from you! May we see the last words of the prophet Malachi come to fruition, "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord, that he may turn the heart of the fathers back through the children."

NINTH GRADE FOUNDATION CLASS
ninth'A Bridge to Better Communication'

The ninth grade Foundations Class worked recently on improving communication skills. To progress toward that goal, the grade was divided into teams who each had bags of identical bridge building materials. In order for the teams to communicate as they worked, they were close enough to hear, but not see, each other .  They had 30 minutes to build half a bridge, with both halves as close to identical as possible, using only verbal communication. The two teams then connected their halves to make a complete bridge.

Each two team unit had a faculty member taking notes on how the members communicated among themselves and with each other. When the bridge was finished, the faculty member led them in a discussion and review of their ability to communicate with each other clearly and respectfully. Some said it was difficult to collaborate with team members who you cannot see. Others reported it was hard to maintain respect if someone misunderstood them. Some felt energized by the pursuit of a common goal. One student realized how hard it can be for teachers to repeat directions.  The students had fun and learned more about improving communication.

ELEVENTH GRADE FOUNDATION CLASS
eleventh'Group Decision Making'

The eleventh graders were divided into groups and given the following scenarios. Each scenario was followed by a debriefing from two representatives for each group describing the decision making process. This activity challenged students to compromise, with decisions reached as a team through discussion,  problem solving, and delegating tasks.

FIRST SCENARIO
:
Each group claimed an uninhabited island as a new country for which they created a  name, d esigned a flag and wrote  5 - 10 laws.

SECOND SCENARIO:
The group members were surgeons at a large hospital. Seven patients needed heart transplants with only one known heart donor. All had compatible tissue and blood typing.  Which patient should be chosen to receive the heart?  Why?  The group had to agree on the choice. Facts students had to consider: Patients are from all walks of life, male & female, age range from 10 to 45 years old. Most  patients who do not receive this heart will continue on the donor list until another donor heart becomes available.
