Gender Pay Gap Remains Five Decades after Equal Pay Act Enacted*

The Equal Pay Act was enacted as a federal law in 1963 and five decades later, the United States has not yet leveled the compensation playing field for women and men. Consistent data over time from federal studies and a new report from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) show that women earn only 80 cents for every $1 men are paid.

The gap has narrowed since the 1960s, due largely to women's progress in education and workplace participation and men's wages increasing at a slower rate. At the current pace, however, it will take until 2059 for full equity to be achieved.

The AAUW study, "The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap," is constructed around five critical questions that present facts, analysis and action steps for the reader. They are:
  • What is the pay gap?
  • How does the pay gap affect women in different demographics?
  • What causes the pay gap?
  • How can I make a difference?
  • What should I do if I experience sex discrimination in the workplace?

NAPS Certification Question ~ Continuing Education Credit and the NAPS Conference

Question:  I attended the recent NAPS Conference in Las Vegas. How can I count that experience toward my continuing education requirement for certification maintenance?

Answer:   Participation in the annual NAPS National Conference is popular way to meet the continuing education requirements for CPC and CTS certification maintenance. Simply add each contact hour that you spent in keynote presentations and education sessions and insert the total on the continuing education log that you submit to NAPS when required.

If you participated in a session during each of the time blocks at Las Vegas, you would have been engaged in a total of 13 contact hours. Those that participated in the Owner/Manager sessions on Monday afternoon can post an additional four hours. Should you attend your state or regional association conference, calculate your contact hours in educational and professional programs the same way.
