October 7, 2016

A Message from Mr. Vandercar - Principal of PES

"Technology won't replace teachers, but teachers who use technology will probably replace teachers who do not."   -Anonymous

Using technology is part of most parents' work and personal life.  When I think about what it will be like ten years from now, I am optimistic and excited yet a little fearful of the unknown.

Author Visit

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, author Mac Barnett visited Pleasantdale Elementary to share his humor and the challenges of writing books. The Blank Page is the biggest daily challenge for every author and illustrator. This is true for Mac Barnett, even after writing 24 books, with his latest book, The Magic Word, released this week.

Mac Barnett traveled from his home in California to visit schools and bookstores, to encourage every student to write and draw stories, just as he does. Yes, it takes time to create a story, a few months or a few years. Sometimes you just need to take a break to help the creative process, and then get back to writing.

Students still interested in purchasing a signed copy of Mac's newest book, The Magic Word, can still purchase through Friday, October 14th. Just use the attached order form and turn into the office.  To download a fun coloring page, click here.

Volunteer Workshop Reminder

One of the strengths of our school is our dedicated volunteer group.  All those interested in volunteering at school must attend a workshop session or meet with Principal Vandercar individually to learn about opportunities and requirements.  If you have attended a workshop in the past, you do not need to repeat.  Check with Matt if you are unsure.  Duration of meetings are approximately 20 minutes.

Volunteer Workshop Schedule:

Thursday, October 13

8:00 a.m.  /  9:15 a.m.  /  3:00 p.m.
A Message from Mr. Glimco - Principal of PMS

Where are we going on-line?

I am not a follower of the comings and goings of the Kardashians and Kanye, yet their most recent headlines actually provides a good tie-in to my target for this weeks blog, as we address internet safety!

Helping Students Help Themselves

"Once a person is determined to help themselves, there is nothing that can stop them."  - Nelson Mandela

In one of my previous posts, I gave an overview of some of the most useful features Schoology, our new Learning Management System (LMS), has to offer.  We are thrilled that Schoology will enable our students to be more self-sufficient learners since class resources, announcements, and calendars with important events and assignments are all posted in one place.
