Dear vtTA Members & Supporters,

If you're looking for tech-focused events, you'll find plenty of them in October.

In particular, this month features the first Innovation Week that kicks-off with the Hackathon , culminates with the 10th Vermont Tech Jam , and has a range of activities in between. It all helps shine a spotlight on the messages that the Vermont Technology Alliance communicates in the state and beyond: Vermont's tech ecosystem is strong and growing, this is a great place to find a tech job or start a tech business, and the tech sector represents an economic growth opportunity for the state.

As part of Innovation Week, the vtTA is partnering with BTV Ignite, Seven Days and Vermont PBS to sponsor a roundtable with the candidates for governor on Vermont's tech economy, Oct. 17 at Main Street Landing in Burlington. The conversation will focus on public-policy priorities identified by the vtTA in our report " Vermont" s Tech Employment - The Hidden Driver of our Economic Growth ," including incorporating tech in Vermont's story, addressing infrastructure needs, and examining policies and legislation that affect tech business in Vermont.

Also as part of Innovation Week, the vtTA will present a Lunch & Learn session in partnership with C2 - Competitive Computing on From Startup to Success - Insights into Growing a Tech Business in Vermont , featuring a panel of leaders from three businesses that started small, but have grown to become successful Vermont tech enterprises.

And we are proud to be an organizing partner for the annual Vermont Tech Jam event. We'll be there with over a 160 job openings from our members. The Vermont Technology Alliance is partnering with BTV Ignite and Seven Days to once again present the Vermont Tech Jam Awards . Who will win? It's up to you! Cast your vote here to select who will be recognized as the winners at the Tech Jam Awards Ceremony Friday, October 21. Voting is open until 11:59 p.m. October 19.

Vermont Energy Control Systems LLC (VECS) of Addison County makes general purpose systems that perform monitoring, data logging, and control functions. The most common application is heating and energy management for complex residential and light commercial/industrial installations, but there are systems in college labs and industrial control settings as well.

The business has its origins in 2005 when one of the principals, Bill Kuhns, installed a wood gasification boiler, heat storage, and solar hot water panels. He quickly discovered that there were no satisfactory control solutions, so he built the forerunner of the company's Vesta controller. In 2013 he joined with Ralph Shepard to form VECS.

The company's primary product is the 'Vesta' line of controllers, sensors, and accessories. The Vesta line includes wired and wireless sensors including temperature, humidity, current, motion, wet floor and others. Control options include the full range of standard residential and commercial controls.

VECS has a 'made in Vermont' supply chain, with Vermont suppliers doing metalwork, powder coating, artwork, soldering, and contract engineering. Product development and final assembly is also done in Vermont. With systems in at least eight states and four provinces, VECS is seeing a real increase in demand in a range of markets.

VECS was founded with a core mission to provide knowledge and tools to enable people and organizations to do a better job of managing energy. As part of that mission, the company is 'Open Source', which means that each controller comes with the source code for the software that runs it.
