A Message from the Superintendent
I hope you enjoyed the long weekend. It was certainly beautiful weather.
This Friday, October 14, is an early release day. It is also Leopard Friday. Leopard Friday is a community event held in the Courtyard of Lovejoy High School. This year's event will be from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. I hope you and your family will join in this showcase of our students, clubs, organizations, and community. A BBQ dinner will be held as part of the festivities. Details regarding the BBQ dinner ticket purchase may be found

. Please note: the deadline to return completed BBQ dinner ticket order forms has been extended to Thursday, October 13th. In the event of inclement weather, all activities will be moved indoors to the auxiliary gym.
This past May, Sloan Creek Intermediate School students packaged 2,000 meals to help the Mission of Hope in Haiti. Following the recent devastation of Hurricane Matthew, SCIS was notified these meals were in route to Haiti. Many of the SCIS students shared concerns regarding the children whom they had seen in pictures. The PTA remembered the valuable lesson this project taught: servant leadership by giving our hands and hearts to help others. So, when the students asked if they could organize another meal packing event, the PTA met the financial need halfway, with the next event scheduled for December 9th.

Lovejoy Volleyball won a big match last night against Highland Park 3 sets to 1. This avenged an earlier HP loss that left the two teams in a tie for first place in district.
The LHS swim team is in full competition mode. The following photos are from the October 4th Reedy-Wakeland-Lovejoy meet. Special thanks to Lovejoy parent, Nancy Burns, for the photos.
The LHS Choir had 32 students participate in Region Choir auditions on Saturday, October 8th. This is the first audition in the process to earn a place in one of the Texas All-State Choirs. We are proud to announce 30 students from LHS will be singing in a region choir.
The following students earned a place in the Region 25 Mixed Choir, and will continue on to the Pre-Area audition:

Julia Dobbs will sing Soprano 1 in the Region 25 Treble Choir.
Cy Feagin (Tenor 2), Kyra Jacobs (Soprano 1), and Luke Wild (Bass 2) will sing in the Region 25 9-10 Honor Choir.
The performance of the Region 25 Choirs will take place at the Allen High School Performing Arts Center at 5:00 PM on Saturday, November 5th. The concert is free and open to the public.
The LHS Robotics team competed in their first scrimmage match of the new season this past Monday. Following is a photo of the team preparing for the scrimmage.

Dear Lovejoy Community:
We are at the end of the first grading period and I hope your child has experienced successes and support for positive learning as a Lovejoy student. As I reviewed our academic calendar for the school year, I can see that students in grades 9, 10, and 11 will be taking the PSAT next Tuesday.
What are the PSAT 8/9 and the PSAT/NMSQT?
The PSAT test measures the skills and knowledge students acquire in high school. The PSAT is aligned with the SAT. It measures the same skills and knowledge appropriate for different grade levels.
The PSAT 8/9 is the first test in the suite of assessments aligned with the SAT. The PSAT 8/9 is designed for students in grades 8 and 9.
Students in grades 10 and 11 will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT. This is the official test used by the National Merit Scholarship Program, and students taking the PSAT/NMSQT will be automatically screened for the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships.
One method for expanding college and university options after graduating from Lovejoy High School is to perform well on standardized exams such as the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT. Colleges and universities typically use performance on these tests in their admission and scholarship criteria. To assist students with the opportunities to demonstrate academic knowledge and skills on these tests, the College Board which administers the PSAT and SAT exams has partnered with Khan Academy to make practice materials available to all students. Score Reporting
Scores for the PSAT 8/9 range from 240-1440 and the PSAT/NMSQT are 320-1520. Each section of the PSAT includes a subscore to provide additional information for students, parents, and educators. Online score reports allow students and families to quickly identify areas of strength, focus areas, and personalized study pathways for the next test the student will take. Online score reports will be available for students on December 12. Lovejoy High School will receive paper reports after the Christmas break.

Men's Tailgate Tournament

The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools is pleased to announce the annual Men's Tailgate Tournament. Join the Foundation for food, beer, and a cornhole tournament. The tournament is double elimination, so everyone is guaranteed to play two games. The event will be held at the home of Chris and Kim Collier in Lucas. Kindergarten Referrals for Gifted and Talented Services

National Digital Citizenship Week: October 17-21
Grown-ups dread it. Kids need it. It's time to have The Talk.
When it comes to navigating social media, online games, smartphones, and the Internet, it is best for kids to get their information from a trusted source. With 92 percent of teens going online daily and nearly three-quarters of kids age 1-8 using apps,
having The Talk is an essential rite of passage.
As parents and educators, we want to raise kids to be safe, responsible, and ethical in the digital world. Giving kids a solid understanding of how we expect them to behave -- both online and off -- starts everyone off on the right foot.
Lovejoy students will participate in Digital Citizenship Week October 17-21, 2016. Activities will focus on how to be safe, think critically, and participate responsibly in our digital world. Digital literacy skills are essential for students to leverage the full potential of technology for learning. We encourage you to engage in conversations with your student about making great choices in their digital lives.

FCA Event/Fields of Faith - October 12
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) will host Fields of Faith on Wednesday, October 12th, at the Lovejoy High School Football Stadium at 7:00 PM. You are invited to arrive early for food. Then take a stand alongside hundreds of thousands of students across the United States and the world as they gather on athletic fields to hear fellow students share their testimonies, challenge each other to read the Bible, and come to faith in Jesus Christ.
Leopard Friday - October 14
The Lovejoy Independent School District will host Leopard Friday on Friday, October 14, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. This annual event, held in the Courtyard of Lovejoy High School, will showcase our students, clubs, organizations, and community. The LHS Courtyard will be transformed into a setting which truly has something for everyone.

Lovejoy Orchestra Spirit Day/Night: October 18
Lovejoy Orchestra will host a spirit day/night on Tuesday, October 18th from 10:30 AM - 8:00 PM at Kelly's Burger Stand (Lucas Road, Parker, TX). Please join the Lovejoy Orchestra for a great combination of delicious food and good company. Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Orchestra Booster Club. Lovejoy Women's Lacrosse Try It Days: October 22 and November 12

Pink Out Day and Football Game: October 28
This year, Lovejoy's annual Pink Out football game and fundraiser will be held on Friday, October 28th. Lovejoy is proud to support this cause to help beat breast cancer. If you would like to support breast cancer research and a local non-profit, you are invited to purchase Pink Out t-shirts to help raise money and spread awareness for the cause. Money raised will benefit Cancer Can Stick It!, a local non-profit created by a breast cancer survivor and rock drummer dedicated to fighting cancer.

Running Over Depression 5K & 1K Fun Run: October 29
Register now for the first ever Running Over Depression 5K/1K at Lovejoy High School. This event is an Eagle Scout project for Bradley Davis, a Junior at Lovejoy High School. The Dallas Morning News published a great article regarding this project. Please

The run follows a certified course, and awards will be given out to top 3 overall and age group finishers. Bibs purchased by all 5K runners contain chips which will accurately time your race and provide immediate results. You may either sign up online, at packet pickup, or on race day. Entry fee is $30 for 5K, and $20 for 1K. All preregistered runners are guaranteed a t-shirt. 3....2....1.... Blast Off.... It's ROCKET LAUNCH TIME!
The Lovejoy Gifted Association and the Dallas Area Rocket Society (DARS) will be sponsoring the ROCKET PROJECT again this year due to the overwhelming success of last year's event! The Rocket Project is an extracurricular STEM activity at which your child builds a rocket one evening, then launches it another day -- all with the assistance of the professionals from DARS. Revisiting Diversity: More than a Buzzword: November 17
You see it sprinkled in college catalogs, corporate mission statements, and in employee training seminars: Diversity. A New York Times piece recently made the claim that the ubiquitous word has all but lost its meaning. This lecture, presented by Dr. Salena Brody, will revisit what diversity really means for our schools, workplaces, and communities, focusing on social science research from the past half century.

Dr. Salena Brody is a professor of Psychology at Collin College. She earned her doctorate in Social Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studying intergroup contact and attitude change. Her research focuses on identifying the conditions under which contact between groups leads to prejudice reduction and other positive outcomes. She is a Phi Beta Kappa member and has received numerous teaching awards including being named the 2016-2017 Outstanding Professor of the Year at Collin College. She is a proud Lovejoy parent and active member of the community, serving on the Friends of Fairview Fire Board of Directors.

Philip Lawrence - Class of 2016
Freshman Philip Lawrence was selected as a Closing Pitcher for the University of Mary Harden Baylor Baseball team. Philip is attending the University on a four-year Academic Scholarship and is studying Pre Med.
Michaela Chavez - Class of 2012
Michaela has been living in Hawaii since graduating from Lovejoy High School. She attended Makana Esthetics Wellness Academy where she received her Esthetician license. She was a Senior Lieutenant in Majestics for 3 years and has continued her love of dance in Hawaii...Polynesian style! She dances with Tunui's Royal Polynesians where she has toured Japan 2 years in a row, was named Overall Best Vahine Dancer and 1st place winner for the Heive I Waikiki this past September. She also dances with Malu Productions and travels to Maui, Kauai, and O'ahu performing on cruise ships and Lu'aus throughout the islands. Michaela is living her dream. She is looking forward to visiting Tahiti in July, 2017.
