Oct. 12, 2016
I don't know about you, but I am excited about the equity and access strides being made in our county districts for students.

Just last month more than 550 educators, including about 50 counselors, attended our first Equity Symposium. The keynote speaker, Dr. Pedro Noguera, shared that  "relationships are the key to teaching and learning" and specifically called out counselors for their relational and leadership skills. Dr. Trish Hatch of San Diego State University's CesCAL facilitated a counselor panel during job alike sessions, and Riverside County Office of Education's session on leading the way to college and career readiness gave counselors information to use and implement in their school districts. Counselors are an important part of the conversations and the solutions surrounding equity and access for our students. Y ou can read what attendees had to say here .

We're ready to help you continue the work! Planning is underway on the second School Counselor Leadership Conference on Feb. 14 at the University of San Diego. We took your feedback on the timing and bumped the event up to Valentine's Day, to really show how much we   care about you !

In the meantime, check out the New School Counselor Leadership Institute and Counselors and Curriculum series all on the new and improved School Counselor Leadership website, where you can find event details, resources, and opportunities.

Fall into Crazy College Applications Time

Every year around this time, high school counselors are  knee-deep in the
college applications process. Plus, this year, there's the  new
FAFSA timeline. Things are crazy! Last year, both CSU and UC campuses  accepted their  highest number of  students in decades.  Below are several  links to resources to support you as you guide your students.

The College Board's SAT Score Converter is the official tool for comparing old and new SAT scores. It uses a method called concordance to estimate how you might have scored on a different test.

Upcoming Professional Learning

This series of workshops is designed in partnership with the SDCOE Student Support Services department for school counselors with less than three years of experience. Topics will include restorative practice, group facilitation, mental health first aid, comprehensive school programs, college admissions, and finding students strengths and career interests.

Join school counselors from across the county for breakfast and networking with a focus on curriculum updates beginning Oct. 12. Throughout the year, SDCOE curriculum and instruction specialists will highlight a different topic each month, such as NGSS, mathematics, physical education, LCAP, and SBAC. Come to each one or split up the events among your team members.

The Kinsey Collection (Rescheduled to Feb. 3)
Knowing that equity for your students is a priority for you, I wanted to pass along the details of an upcoming event that shines a light on the previously untold story of African-Americans in our country. On Feb. 3, the San Diego County Office of Education is hosting a showcase of The Kinsey African-American Art and History Collection from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The location is to be determined. Former Xerox CEO Bernard Kinsey will be there to share how his family's extensive collection documenting the African-American experience from 1595 to the Civil Rights Era can support your goal of eliminating opportunity and achievement gaps for your students.
