Greetings Potential New Schools to PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports)
The PBIS New Cohort 13 application is now available!  This application is due January 11, 2017.  Please see application attached.

With some new ESSA requirements and legislative support, now might be the time to become a MN PBIS school.  For some key talking points of why to consider PBIS, please read below.

Key Messages of PBIS
  • PBIS is a school-wide consistent approach to creating a positive school culture
  • Prevention focused with evidence based practices for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
  • Research indicates that student learn better in a positive environment
  • With the new ESSA requirements, the new state report card MAY see schools needing to report measures of school quality, climate, safety, and rates of in-school suspensions
  • PBIS supports 4 key elements: Social competence and academic achievement, student behavior, staff behavior, and data for decision making processes for system-wide implementation.
  • By relying on concise rules and frequent rewards, the PBIS approach to school-wide behavior management drastically reduces discipline problems and improves academic performance among all students.
  • Regional support in the implementation of PBIS
  • Ongoing training opportunities
  • FREE for 2 years: SWIS behavior data tracking system
  • PBIS has been supported by MDE for over 10 years.
  • The MN Legislatures has recently supported PBIS efforts by approving 2.7 million for PBIS efforts; the funding priorities for these new state funds are:
  • Bring PBIS training to more schools.
  • Provide training and support for cohort trained schools
  • Continue building statewide capacity and infrastructure for training, coaching, and evaluation
  • Provide incentives and funding for local school/district implementers that continue to evaluate and report data, including fidelity data
