        Happy New Year!
It's a new year and we have a new name. After 26 years as a Wild Bird Center franchisee, we are now Wild Bird Company of Boulder - fully independent and still family-owned and operated by Steve and Julie Frye. With our new name and branding, we will continue to offer you even more choices of quality backyard bird seed & suet, equipment, optics, and supplies. And, of course, the same friendly and knowledgeable staff.

We will be sending you an announcement of our completely redesigned Wild Bird Company Website and Online Shopping Site during the first Quarter of 2015. In the meantime our store and current Website remain open as usual, so visit us soon at the same location with the same phone (303) 442-1322 and email address steve@wbcboulder.com.

Thanks for all of your support!  We look forward to seeing you and hearing about your latest birding experiences.     --Steve

Saturday, January 3, 2015 Bird Walk

The first bird walk of the New Year! It was great to get out there and see some good birds before the snow flew. We did see one sad sight this morning, a coyote with a bad case of mange. It won't survive too much longer. We always see examples every week of how bitter-sweet life can be and how that makes life rich. You won't, however, see an image of this coyote in the slide show.

Sharp-Shinned Hawk

  Sharp-Shinned Hawk

This bird gets its funny name from a raised ridge on its tarsus which looks like where our shin would be. It belongs to a group of hawks called the accipiters which are mostly forest dwelling, bird eating hawks. They have short broad wings for fast acceleration and maneuverability and a long rudder of a tail to help make quick changes in direction. These attributes help them chase after and catch birds in flight. They are a fairly common visitor to backyards where they pursue small birds attracted to feeders.
