Sue Henderson, Habitat for Humanity International's (HFHI) Vice President of Operations for USA and Canada, recently visited Delaware to give the Keynote Speech at the Governor's Housing Conference in Dover. Introduced by Sussex County Habitat's Executive Director,
Kevin Gilmore, Sue highlighted the excellent work of all three Delaware Habitat Affiliates, saying she is particularly proud that Delaware is the first state to boast 100% participation in HFHI's Neighborhood Revitalization (NR) initiative. NR is a broader approach to eliminating poverty and substandard housing by involving community partners at every level to help turn around entire neighborhoods where Habitat is building or repairing homes. Sue pointed to the Downtown Development Districts in each of Delaware's three counties as particular opportunities for involvement from all the community partner's present at the conference, reminding them of Habitat's mission is to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Sue also took the opportunity to meet and acknowledge as many Habitat staffers and AmeriCorps service members as possible for the key role they are playing in bringing volunteers and partners together to revitalize communities and build hope in Delaware.

Habitat staff and AmeriCorps service members recently celebrated the dedication of our partner,
Kashanna's new home in Ingram Village in Ellendale.
Rev. A. Iona Smith Nze, M.Div., Pastor of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, Ellendale, gave the blessing. Executive Director, Kevin Gilmore, Construction Site Supervisor, Shannon Bull, and Repair Partner and office volunteer, Sandra Hazzard also took part in the ceremony which included the long-standing Habitat traditions of presenting a Bible, a ceremonial gold key, a homeowner's prayer, and a gift from the ReStore.
Kevin along with Board President, Kathy Goodman and Board Member, David Pedersen, continued the celebration the next day at Kashanna's settlement. Congratulations to Kashanna and her beautiful children! We wish them many years of health and happiness in their new home!

Women Build 2016 has been really productive! In August and September, they helped frame and sheath and side this new home on Horsey Church Road in Delmar.
The group serves on site two days a month and is always open to new volunteers. No experience is necessary.

| Sussex County Homebuyers Fair |

Susan Davis, recently represented Habitat and AmeriCorps at the
Sussex County Homebuyers Fair. Held at Delaware Technical Community College,
the goal of the Homebuyers Fair is to provide individuals and families thinking about home ownership with their credit information, a reasonable approximation of what house price range they may qualify for, and a preliminary work plan to help them become mortgage ready.
After meeting with a credit counselor, participants were invited to visit with each of the vendors and exhibitors to learn more about the different programs, opportunities, and resources available to them as potential homebuyers.
As the Family Services Coordinator, Heather provided information and applications on Habitat's Home Ownership and Major and Minor Repairs Programs in both English and Spanish. As Media Coordinator, Susan networked with other vendors and exchanged social media contact information. #AmeriCorpsGetsItDone

We're holding two T-shirt Design Contests: One for our youth groups and one for our Collegiate Challengers! If you have an original idea, send it by October 17 to [email protected]. It must include our 25th anniversary logo (as seen below) and be appropriate to be worn on our build sites. We'll choose two lucky winners, whose designs will be printed on our t-shirts and worn by our volunteer groups this year. Plus, we'll send each of the winners a gift card as our way of saying thanks for supporting Sussex County Habitat. Get creative and good luck!

| Welcome Our New AmeriCorps Class of 2016-17! |
AmeriCorps service members commit a
year or more of their lives to serve with a non-profit in order to make a difference in the lives of others. Each member receives a "living allowance" which is low enough to "enable them to live in poverty as the people they serve." If the individual satisfactorily completes their service hours, they are also presented with a commensurate education award.
AmeriCorps Service Members gain an experience that will last a life time. During their term of service, many develop a deeper understanding of the problems their fellow human beings experience on a daily basis, and continue to work to alleviate poverty, substandard education and housing, and other social problems that plague our society throughout their careers. In fact, AmeriCorps Service Members pledge to "Gets Things Done for America" by serving others during their service term and beyond.
This year's AmeriCorps Delaware onboarding training inclu
ded general orientation, safety and construction overviews, the history of AmeriCorps and it's long-standing relationship with Habitat for Humanity, the history of the Sussex County Habitat affiliate, leadership training, and American Red Cross disaster relief training, shelter management, and CPR/AED/First Aid certification. Members may be called upon to leave their "regular" duties at any time to serve in a disaster relief situation. For example, many AmeriCorps members served after Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. AmeriCorps Delaware service members often serve at local Code Purple and/or at homeless and evacuation shelters.

Bob Hesaltine
, better known to the Sussex County
Habitat family as "Little Bob," turned 90-years young on September 20th!
Bob and his wife, Nancy, "retired" to Bethany Beach in 1988. Before retirement, Bob worked as Director of Facilities at the National Orthopedic Hospital in Northern Virginia. A friend of his from New Jersey, who was involved in Habitat, encouraged Bob to find a Habitat affiliate in Delaware, and as they say, the rest is history.
Since 1994, Bob has
has worked on nearly every house built by Sussex County Habitat for Humanity. Over the years he has served as the affiliate's safety officer, house leader, site supervisor, and construction c
rew leader. In the past, Bob has been recognized as the construction volunteer of the year and has received the Delaware Governor's Award for Volunteerism. He also serves as a neighborhood watch commander in South Bethany Beach.
Bob still regularly joins a group of construction volunteers on Wednesdays and Saturdays to help build Habitat homes here in Sussex County. Bob has also built homes during the Jimmy Carter Work Projects (JCWP) and a Habitat International Global Village (GV) service trip. His contributions include:
- 22 years (and counting!) volunteering for Sussex County Habitat
- About 1,700 days of service
- Over 10,000 volunteer hours
- Driving over 125,000 miles (Spending $15,000 or more in gas)
