It's time to enjoy the crisp weather, the leaves changing colors, and all things Halloween. In this issue, you'll learn about new businesses coming to our City,

The Rancho Cordova City Council approved amendments to the Rio Del Oro Specific Plan, the largest land development project in the City, in a Special Meeting in August. These approvals move the project forward to the design and permitting phase, allowing for a ground breaking as early as 2018.
Rio Del Oro covers 3,828 acres on a site bordered by White Rock Road to the north, Sunrise Boulevard to the west, and Douglas Road to the south. The project includes 12,189 residential units, one high school, two middle schools, six elementary schools, 157 acres of commercial development, 90 acres of business park, 269 acres of industrial park, 510 acres of wetland preserve, 121 acres of community parks, 57 acres of neighborhood parks, and 16 miles of trails.

SIGN UP FOR EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS
The City of Rancho Cordova has a new way for you to be notified by phone, text, or email in the event of an emergency in Rancho Cordova and surrounding areas. All it takes is the click of a button and a few simple steps!
Sacramento Alert will enable the City to provide you with critical information in emergency situations, such as severe weather, missing persons, evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods, and other natural or human-caused disasters.

FREE CORDOVAN RIDES
Try Transit Month Kicks Off
As part of Try Transit Month, the Rancho CordoVan will offer free rides during the month of October. The CordoVan serves the neighborhoods of Anatolia, Sunridge Park, Kavala Ranch, and Villages of Zinfandel, as well as the business parks near Zinfandel Drive. The CordoVan also connects with Sacramento RT's light rail system at the Zinfandel Station. Click

STORM PREPAREDNESS
Tips to Prepare for the Rainy Season
Fall is here and you can do your part to prepare for a storm by following these safety tips:
Check Storm Drains Near Your Home
Leaves can clog storm drains and lead to localized flooding. Sweep away leaves that are in the gutter or on top of a storm drain prior to rainfall. If you notice a drain that is filled with debris, call the City of Rancho Cordova at (916) 851-8700 to have it cleaned.
Check Your Trees
California is still in a state of continued drought. Some trees have been severely strained from lack of water, making them especially vulnerable during windy conditions. Remove damaged or weak branches and water your trees to minimize the chances of them falling over in the wind.
Don't Use Pesticides or Herbicides Before Rain
These pollution sources can make their way into a nearby storm drain and harm Rancho Cordova's creeks and the American River.
Helpful Phone Numbers & After-Hours Emergencies
To report flooding, fallen trees, and other non-life threatening emergencies during a storm, call the City of Rancho Cordova at (916) 851-8700. Service is available during regular business hours and after-hours.
To report a power outage, call SMUD at
If you see downed power lines or hear crackling wires, stay away! To report downed power lines, call 911 and then SMUD at 1-888-456-7683. Keep others away, and avoid contact with anything that may be touching fallen wires.

REGIONAL TRANSIT UPDATES
New Safety Mobile Application
Sacramento Regional Transit (RT) has launched a new safety app called Alert SacRT.
The new app offers riders a quick and discreet method for reporting suspicious activity directly to RT Police using a smartphone or tablet. App users can send pictures, text messages, six second videos, and locations of suspicious persons and/or activities.
For those without a smartphone, the app also allows for texting reports of suspicious activities to (916) 318-3330.
New Payment Machines
In September, Sacramento RT started installing 29 new payment machines at light rail stations and Park-Pay-and-Ride stations (Franklin, Meadowview, Florin, Power Inn, Roseville Road, Watt/I-80 West, Watt/I-80). The n
ew machines allow riders to purchase both fares and parking passes from the same machine, using a credit or debit card.
There is no change to the daily or monthly fee to park, and parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The new fare vending machines at the Park-Pay-and-Ride stations require customers to enter a license plate number instead of a parking space number. If you have no license plate, enter the last four digits of your VIN (located at the base of the front windshield).

BE TREE-MENDOUS
With both rain and cooler fall temperatures on the way, now is the time to be a tree-mendous person! You can help the Sacramento Tree Foundation by
volunteering at events, planting trees at your home using the
Sacramento Shade program, or looking for parks and schools that could use trees with the
Community Shade program.
Even with the cooler and wetter weather, our trees still need some attention.

Mercantile Road Rehabilitation Project Update
The City of Rancho Cordova is currently working on the Mercantile Road Rehabilitation Project. The project includes an asphalt overlay of the road surface, installation of sidewalk curb ramps at intersections, upgrades to the storm drain system, and new street striping. The $1.6 million project is designed to improve road surfaces, driver safety, aesthetics, and flood protection.
The City's contractor is scheduled to place an asphalt overlay on Mercantile Road from Sunco Drive to Folsom Boulevard on Thursday, October 6 and Friday, October 7. Work will be performed between 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. and one-way traffic control will be utilized in an ongoing effort to bring safer and better roads with minimal interference to our businesses. LINCOLN HIGHWAY & THE RANCHO CORDOVA HERITAGE CORRIDOR
Vintage cars, history displays, food trucks, music, and the unveiling of a new monument are all on the schedule when Rancho Cordova celebrates its role in the historic Lincoln Highway on Sunday, October 9th!
You don't have to own a show car to participate in this celebration of the Great American Road Trip, which kicked off in 1914 with the opening of the Lincoln Highway - the first Coast-to-Coast Highway from New York Times Square to San Francisco's Golden Gate.

LEO'S AMAZING RACE
Join the Sacramento Children's Museum on Sunday, October 16th from
10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for Leo's Amazing Race! This is a family-friendly event celebrating the Museum's fifth birthday. Teams of four will compete in 10 different challenges and race against the clock - all for a chance at a $500 cash prize. The museum has teamed up with local businesses to create different team challenges, which will range from eating something unusual to learning a ballroom dance to racing a tricycle.

CAMPAIGN WHISTLESTOP
There was a time when candidates running for President of the United States would board a train making short stops at towns across the country, giving speeches from the back of the train. The Cordova Community Council and Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce revive that tradition each election year by hosting Campaign Whistlestop at the October Rancho Cordova Luncheon.
The candidates have been invited to give three-minute whistlestop speeches while stumping for your vote. It's fast-paced and informative, and for some local offices, it will be a rare chance to hear what the hopefuls have to say.
The October Rancho Cordova Luncheon is on Friday, October 21st from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Rancho Cordova City Hall, 2729 Prospect Park Drive. Lunch is $12 for members with reservations, and $20 for non-members and members without registrations.

CORDOVA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TEAM UP
Sacramento Kings center Willie Cauley-Stein recently partnered with Rancho Cordova-based VSP Vision Care to lead a fashion design workshop at Cordova High School. The group met with a mix of business, fashion, art, and IB students to engage them in brainstorming activities intended to stretch their creative thinking and potentially provide Cauley-Stein with some ideas for his new fashion line.
Ryan Scott, the lead instructor of the Business-Technology Academy at Cordova High School was the liaison between VSP and Cordova High School and brought the program to his students.
"VSP's collaboration with Cordova High really is going to give students an example of what life is like beyond the walls of campus. They're able to see how business works and are able to look at different opportunities," Scott said.
