Special Guest Speaker Tyler Schilhabel
On Wednesday, October 5th, Campus Ministry had special guest speaker, Mr. Tyler Schilhabel, speak to the entire school about his faith journey. Tyler was the starting QB for the Independence football team and was in an ATV accident at Oceano Dunes over Labor Day Weekend in 2010. The accident left him paralyzed from the chest down. Tyler shared with the students his incredible faith journey and that he would not change a thing as he has a happy life. He shared that immediately following the crash his best friend held his hand and they sang hymns until help arrived. He wished for all of our students to have a friend who would do that for them. He told them he looks at himself in the mirror every morning and tells himself to "be happy" and his faith, combined with making the choice to be happy and accepting God's plan, have led him to a college degree, a great relationship, and his dream job. Tyler will begin his new job in January as the Recruiting Coordinator for the University of Utah's football team. In the meantime, he is helping coach football at Independence.

Admin Corner
Message from
Caitlin Witwer
Activities Director
Dear Parents,
As a first year Activities Director, so far I have been thoroughly impressed by the talent, school spirit and commitment the students display. Next week is the first time I will have the pleasure of helping the students execute what should be a great Homecoming Week. Your students came up with the theme of "Garces Music Festival" and have planned "dress up" days to fit the theme. Please encourage your student to dress up as we want the campus to feel fun and festive all week.
Beginning on Sunday, the students will start building their sets and by now many of you may have been recruited to help. On Thursday night, following the freshman football game, we will have a mandatory skit run through.
We hope to see all of you at the Homecoming Game Friday night as it should be a memorable evening. Between the JV and Varsity game, we will introduce the Homecoming Court as they are driven around the track. At halftime, we will have a performance by the cheerleaders, the class skits and crown the Homecoming King and Queen.
Please encourage your student to purchase the Homecoming T-shirt. They will be on sale all week and are $15. If you would like to have one for you and your family members to wear, send your t-shirt money with your student or come up to school and you can purchase one during lunch. The Homecoming Shirts are black - so if you don't purchase a Homecoming T-shirt - wear black to the football game - it's a BLACK OUT Friday night!
Before the varsity game on Friday, The Herd will meet at the ASB Room by 6:30. We want to walk into the stadium at the end of the JV game so they are ready to cheer for the Homecoming Court.
Tickets to the Homecoming Dance will be on sale all week for $15. For the dance, encourage your student to dress up in clothes that will "glow" at our Neon themed dance!
I hope to see our students dressed up each day, our stands full on Friday night, and all of our students at our Homecoming Dance.
If you ever have any questions, or any ideas to help promote school spirit, please reach out to me at
[email protected].
