Fall Apparel Tips
While one layer of clothing is great for most warm weather riding, many cyclists need layers to stay comfortable whenever the temperatures get cooler. In the fall and spring, 2 layers are usually enough to do the trick. While some cyclists prefer to layer with arm warmers and leg warmers or tights, others go for a thin shell jacket/vest up top and nothing on their legs (other than their shorts).
Light, thin full fingered gloves might also be necessary. 60 degrees can sometimes feel like 40 degrees on a bike.
The goal with the layers is to hold in body heat so that your muscles get warmer faster and stay warm as you ride along. Then, as you get too warm (sweating under the layers) it is time to peel off the extra layer. My friends always make fun of how much clothing I wear in cooler temperatures, but I really like to stay comfortable. Just make sure that you have a safe way to carry the apparel once you take it off.
One last item. If you decide to wear tights, they go on OVER your cycling shorts. That way, you can peel off the tights without being arrested for public nudity.
