If you would like to support breast cancer research and a local non-profit, you are invited to purchase Pink Out t-shirts to help raise money and spread awareness for the cause. PSAT Testing
All 9th-11th graders will be taking the PSAT test at LHS next Wednesday, October 19th. Students should bring their own pencils and calculators. All testing should be finished by 12:30 pm, and we will follow our regular schedule for all afternoon classes. Seniors should report to school in the Main Gym at 10:30 am. Seniors that have Dual Credit courses will attend those classes as usual.

What is the PSAT/NMSQT?
The PSAT test measures the skills and knowledge that students learn in high school. The PSAT is aligned with the SAT. It measures the same skills and knowledge in ways that make sense for different grade levels. Students taking the PSAT/NMSQT will be automatically screened for the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. PSAT 8/9 is not eligible for entry.

Looking for extra PSAT practice?
Students may access free practice material through College Board. Personalized study is also available through Khan Academy. Visit Lovejoy's PSAT, SAT, and ACT Resource page for additional information:

Grown-ups dread it. Kids need it. It's time to have The Talk.
When it comes to navigating social media, online games, smartphones, and the Internet, it's best for kids to get their info from a trusted source. With 92 percent of teens going online daily and nearly three-quarters of kids age 1-8 using apps, having The Talk is an essential rite of passage.
As parents and educators, we want to raise kids to be safe, responsible, and ethical in the digital world. Giving kids a solid understanding of how we expect them to behave -- both online and off -- starts everyone off on the right foot.
Lovejoy students will participate in Digital Citizenship Week October 17-21, 2016. Activities will focus on how to be safe and to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world. Digital literacy skills are essential for students to leverage the full potential of technology for learning. We encourage you to engage in conversations with your student about making great choices in their digital lives.

Parent Workshop: Building Resilience in Youth - Tomorrow
Please join us for a presentation by Dr. Jennifer Hughes on Wednesday, October 12th at 7:00 pm in the LHS Lecture Hall. Understanding the nature of resilience, both its development and how to foster resilience in those youth at risk for or already having depression or anxiety, is an important goal of the UT Southwestern Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care (CDRCC; Director, Madhukar Trivedi, MD) Risk and Resilience Network (RRN). Dr. Jennifer Hughes, a clinical psychologist and the head of the RRN, will discuss resilience in youth, focusing on the role of stress and adverse life events in developing resilience, sharing how coping skills, social support, and mastery relate to resilience, and discussing how parents can foster resilience in youth. Additionally, Dr. Hughes will discuss an exciting new mental health promotion program, Youth Aware of Mental Health, which will be delivered in 9th grade health classes at Lovejoy High School this academic year.

Revisiting Diversity:  More than a Buzzword:  November 17
You see it sprinkled in college catalogs, corporate mission statements, and in employee training seminars:  Diversity.  A New York Times piece recently made the claim that the ubiquitous word has all but lost its meaning.  This lecture, presented by Dr. Salena Brody, will revisit what diversity really means for our schools, workplaces, and communities, focusing on social science research from the past half century.

Thursday, November 17, 2016
6:00 - 7:30 PM
Lovejoy ISD Administration Building/Training Room

Dr. Salena Brody is a professor of Psychology at Collin College.  She earned her doctorate in Social Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studying intergroup contact and attitude change.  Her research focuses on identifying the conditions under which contact between groups leads to prejudice reduction and other positive outcomes.  She is a Phi Beta Kappa member and has received numerous teaching awards including being named the 2016-2017 Outstanding Professor of the Year at Collin College.  She is a proud Lovejoy parent and active member of the community, serving on the Friends of Fairview Fire Board of Directors.

Senior Project Judges Needed
Senior Project is an exciting part of every LHS senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8-10 minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits. This school year, we will host four presentation evenings - November 15th, December 7th, January 17th and February 16th.

If you have never judged before, judges training will begin at 5:30 pm in the Lovejoy High School Library. Dinner will be provided. Presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude by 9:00 p.m. at the latest.

If you would like to sign-up to judge please complete the google form below:

Please contact Sara Seoighe ( [email protected] ) with questions.

Students Leaving Campus
In the event that students need to leave campus during the school day and they drive themselves to school, we will need you to send an email to [email protected] . Please include the student's name, the time they need to leave, the reason, and a phone number to be used to contact you. Once we have received the email, we will call you for verification, and the email will provide us with the needed documentation for our records.

Parking for Daytime Events
This is a reminder that we have changed our parking policy in regards to campus events that are scheduled during school hours. Due to the increase in the number of student-assigned parking spots in the back parking lot, we ask that parents park in the front, and we will have a sign-in table just inside the cafeteria.
