A Message from OGAP

An important formative assessment strategy used during the summer training was the use of 'public posters" to engage all students and gather information about participant thinking to support the development of a mathematics concept. A public poster by a group increases the accountability of the work represented and from a formative assessment perspective it gives you multiple opportunities to gather evidence of student thinking: while students are working alone, while the groups are working, and during the public display and discussion of the posters. You may remember completing posters in this way during the training on Division and on the Big Ideas of Multiplication

Action Item

Have you tried this strategy yet? If not, think about a concept or a meaty problem that you want students to solve. Have them work on their own and then as a small group (no more than 3 or four students). Display the posters and engineer a discussion that moves student understanding forward.
