Meet your new alumni board members

A team effort
As Dean Peter Cowhey fills the shoes of UC San Diego's interim executive vice chancellor in 2016-17, several of his GPS colleagues are walking a new walk, too. Led by Acting Dean and Professor Gordon Hanson, GPS has created four new associate dean positions to be held by senior faculty members during Cowhey's absence. Alumnae sustain a friendship for the books
The fondness for sustainability that brought together Lauren DeMates and Rosaly Byrd at GPS five years ago not only continues to fuel their friendship but also turn profits today in that of their burgeoning blog, The Sustainability Co-op, and a book deal. "Sustainability Made Simple: Small Changes for Big Impact" is slated for release in March 2017. Read more >>
Francisco Garfias: Building off of local knowledge
Francisco Garfias is an assistant professor of political science at GPS and one of several new faculty members to join the School this fall--including Professors Teevrat Garg, Nico Ravanilla, Kate Ricke and Weiyi Shi. Garfias is an expert voice on comparative political economy, econometrics and Mexican and Latin American politics. His current research focuses on the political economy of taxation and state capacity both in Mexico and Brazil. In addition, he also has projects underway regarding the effects of communications technology on protest.   Read more >>

Washington, D.C., Alumni Club...
cheered on their home team, The Nationals, together on July 22. Earlier in June, alumni also gathered together to toast to Professor Richard Feinberg's new book, "Open for Business," with Feinberg himself following his a promotional event at Brookings Institution. 
L.A./South Bay/Long Beach Alumni Club...
enjoyed a dinner party, held at the home of Louis Tseng '93, on June 8, with special guest Lei Guang, director of the GPS's 21st Century China Program. The club also held a meet-up at AnQi Gourmet Bistro on July 28.
San Diego Alumni Club...
held a meet-up with a beautiful backdrop on July 21 at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla, Calif., drawing more than 20 alumni, students and also Professor Richard Feinberg.
Bay Area Alumni Club...
mingled over Mediterranean food as part of a meet-up at La Mediterranee Noe on July 23. The brunch drew nearly 20 alumni and friends of the School. 
Thailand Alumni Club...
saw a few of its members, Jay Harriman '07 and Derek Taylor '12, catch up with Associate Professor Krislert Samphantharak over dinner in Bangkok in July.

Braden Agpoon, MPIA '15, is an impact evaluation program assistant at Social Impact in Washington, D.C., with responsibilities for conducting impact evaluations of Millennium Challenge Corp. and U.S. Agency for International Development projects in Guatemala, Honduras and Tanzania.

Roberta Brodsky Connors, MPIA '06, is vice president of administration for BayWa r.e. Solar Systems in Murrieta, Calif.

Shannon Cummings Morris, MPIA '10, launched a global food subscription box called Spiced Pantry. She currently resides in Yarmouth, Maine.

Peter Foo, MPIA '07, rejoined Chemonics International in Washington D.C., as the program director in the Afghanistan region. Previously, he served as a country director/Asia program manager for Relief International in Pakistan.

Duc Huynh, MPIA '04, is a senior analyst in the strategic planning department at Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia.

Dan Irving, MPIA '92, vice president of international at WX Brands in Oakland, Calif., is sponsoring a Beer for Books event in Tokyo with Gary Bremermann, MPIA '91, in May 2016.

Zeyuanyu (Zoey) Long, MIA '16, accepted a position as a customs specialist at Qualcomm Inc. in San Diego.

Brian Mallis, MPIA '10, landed a new job as a senior web developer at Sony in San Diego, where he also is buying a house and loving being back near his alma mater-plus working with fellow alum Blake Ellison, MPIA '11.

Nicholas Matcheck, MPIA '07, a former officer in the Navy, has been invited to serve as a Peace Corps NGO Advising Volunteer in Paraguay.

Jamie Schau, MPIA '11, after a four-year stint in Chile, returned to the U.S. to work as an internships advisor for Latin America programs at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore., and will be married in September 2016.
