October 6, 2016 - WASHINGTON -The United Methodist Church's agency charged with challenging, leading, and equipping lay members and clergypersons to become more interculturally competent, to ensure institutional equity, and to facilitate vital conversations about religion, race, tribe, and culture has elected Bishop W. Earl Bledsoe as president of its board of directors for the next four years.
Bledsoe, episcopal leader of the Northwest Texas-New Mexico Area of The United Methodist Church, took the helm of the board of the General Commission on Religion and Race on September 29. The agency, one of 13 international churchwide agencies of the 12-million-member United Methodist Church, also elected the Rev. Stephen Handy of Nashville, Tenn., as vice president, and Rosie Rios, a student at the University of California at Los Angeles, as secretary.

An Honest Conversation - Racial Tension & the Role of the Church
On Sept. 11th, St. Stephen's UMC-ABQ hosted an honest conversation about issues related to racial tension & what the role of the church may be.  Rev. Todd Salzwedel, St. Stephen's UMC-ABQ; Dr. Marcus "Goodie" Goodloe, Author of Kingmaker; Pamelya Herndon, Executive Director of the SW Women's Law Center and Toby Hill, Music Artist participated in the panel discussion.  Houston-based music artists, Soulfruit performed and shared their insight.  It was a the beginning of a much broader conversation and perhaps, a movement to develop relationships and begin to talk more openly with each other about how we can "move the ball forwa rd" and bring much needed healing to our community.

Celebrate Retired Ministers' Day in November

Look for your Retired Ministers' Day envelopes in the mail soon!  Traditionally, the NM Conference Board of Pension & Benefits has asked that every other year, the first Sunday in November (or a selected Sunday in November) be set aside as Retired Ministers' Day.  It is up to churches to decide when they would like to celebrate our retired clergy.  This serves to recognize the dedicated, loving service of our retired clergy, and to distribute educational information concerning their health and pension benefits.  Contact Dru Ann Kuntz, Conference Benefits Officer:  dru@nmconfum.com or 505-255-8786, ext. 102.

How to do Video Announcements: 5 Questions to Ask

by Jeremy Steele
Video announcements may seem daunting, but creating them is a great introduction to basic video editing and could really breathe new life into all areas of your ministry. What starts off as people making announcements in front of a camera could blossom into   beautiful ministry spotlights  such as a video or photo slideshow from your latest outreach event. You might get inspired to start a vlog (i.e blog in video format). With a little practice, it'll be like kindergarten all over again. You do some cutting, some pasting and before long - voila! Masterpiece. Programs like iMovie (for Mac only) make it seem that simple, but there are several   iMovie alternatives  for other operating systems.
How much time does producing video announcements take? According to people in churches who produce video announcements regularly, once you have produced your first few, it should take an hour or less to shoot and edit a five-minute video of your lay leader giving the announcements - even with adding extra graphics and text.
