INTERNATIONAL SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES FOR TCC 2016

Clare Ardern, BPhysio(Hons), PhD
Clare is an Australian physiotherapist with an award winning PhD in orthopaedic sports medicine (2013). Her main research interests are returning to sport after injury and how quality systematic reviews can help practitioners use quality evidence to make quality clinical decisions. Clare has published widely in the area of return to sport, and her research has put a spotlight on the importance of psychological factors to returning to sport after injury. Mario Bizzini, PT, PhD (Switzerland) is as a research associate at the Schulthess Clinic in Zürich, Switzerland. He works there for the FIFA Medical Research and Assessment Center, the Swiss Concussion Center and the Human Performance Lab. His research interests focus on prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries. He has at today 62 peer-reviewed publications, 5 books, and 12 book chapters on these topics, and has lectured at many international congresses. Mario is a reviewer for various scientific journals, Deputy Editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy. Mario is also a specialist in sports physiotherapy (committee member of the Swiss and of the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy), a rehabilitation consultant for professional ice hockey and football/soccer teams, and has worked at three FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014), two FIFA Women's World Cups (2007, 2015) and three Olympic Games (2008, 2012, 2016).

Mark De Carlo, PT, DPT, MHA, SCS, ATC, received his Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education/Athletic Training from West Virginia University. He then received a Master of Science degree from the University of Indianapolis Krannert School of Physical Therapy. He is certified as a Sports Clinical Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and has completed a Master of Science degree in Health Administration at Indiana University. He received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Kentucky.

Mark has over 35 published articles and book chapters in the area of sports physical therapy. He has presented many lectures nationally and internationally including over 70 lectures over the past 4 years alone on topics related to orthopaedic and sports physical therapy. Mark is currently serving as executive director of the Sports Physical Therapy Section of the American Physical Therapy Association, and served as president for six years. He has served as treasurer of the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy, Inc. Board of Directors and member-at-large and treasuer of the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy.

Mark De Carlo served as the Chief Operating Officer at Methodist Sports Medicine Center in Indianapolis, before taking the position as Director of Research and Outcomes at Accelerated Rehabilitation, now a part of Athletico. Mark is a dedicated clinician, with strong, long-term ties to the NFL Indianapolis Colts. Mark has won numerous awards from the SPTS, including Outstanding Service, The Ronald G. Peyton Award and the Turner A. Blackburn Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award. He was presented Marilyn Moffat Award by the APTA, and is a popular speaker, both nationally and internationally.

Sue Falsone, PT, ATC, SCS Born in Buffalo, NY, Sue received a bachelor's degree in physical therapy from Daemen College in Amherst, New York. She continued her education by earning a master's degree in human movement science, with a concentration in sports medicine, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Sue has presented at state, national and international level conferences in areas focusing on pillar strength, integration of physical therapy and performance training, and comprehensive kinetic chain assessment and rehabilitation. She's a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy (SCS), a certified athletic trainer (ATC), certified orthopedic manual therapist for the spine (COMT) and a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Sue worked at Athletes' Performance for 13 years, last serving as the Vice President of Performance Physical Therapy and Team Sport. She worked with the Los Angeles Dodgers for 6 years, last serving as head athletic trainer and physical therapist. She holds the distinction of being the first female head athletic trainer in any of the four major sports in the United States (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA).

She served as Head of Athletic Training and Sport Performance with US Soccer's Men's National Team.

She was named a Distinguished Alumni at Daemen College and has been inducted into her high school's Athletic Hall of Fame (Kenmore West).

Her philosophy includes looking at the athlete as a whole person, working with the entire body to create an optimal environment for healing and performance training.

Phillip Glasgow, PhD is head of sports medicine at the Sports Institute Northern Ireland. Phil's doctoral studies investigated factors influencing exercise induced muscle damage and its management. He has extensive experience in high performance sport having worked with elite athletes from a wide range of sports including rugby union, football, hockey, athletics, boxing, sailing, cycling, swimming and squash. He has worked at a number of major International sporting events including the Olympic Games (London 2012 (Team GB); Beijing 2008 (Team Ireland)), Commonwealth Games (Head Physiotherapist Team NI, Delhi 2010; Glasgow 2014) and has been appointed as the Chief Physiotherapy Officer to Team GB for Rio 2016. His particular interests are in the field of functional rehabilitation and in the management of muscle tendon unit injuries. He is currently Vice President of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sport and Exercise Medicine (Physios in Sport, UK), having acted for six years as chair for Education and Research. He regularly presents at international conferences on various aspects of sports medicine. Phil is a visiting professor of the School of Sport at Ulster University and teaches on a number of postgraduate sports medicine programmes at various UK and European universities.

Bryan C. Heiderscheit, PT, PhD is a Professor in the Departments of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin(UW)-Madison.  He is the Director of the Runners' Clinic through the UW Sports Medicine Center; Director of Sports Performance Research for UW Athletics; and Co-director of the UW Neuromuscular Biomechanics Laboratory. Dr. Heiderscheit's research is aimed at understanding and enhancing the clinical management of orthopedic conditions, with particular focus on running-related injuries. Support for his work includes the National Institutes of Health and NFL Medical Charities. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy and the Treasurer for the Sports Physical Therapy Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. Bryan is also one of the faculty for The Science of Running, a resource for health care professionals and the running community with evidenced-based strategies to advance running injury management. www.scienceofrunning.net

Nicola Phillips, PhD, MSc, FCSP is an Internationally Registered Sports Physiotherapy specialist and a Professor at Cardiff University.  She has worked extensively with both the Welsh and British teams on five Olympic Games and eight Commonwealth Games, and was Chief Physiotherapist for Team GB at the Beijing Olympics. She is also a Consultant Physiotherapist for Sport Wales and the Welsh Rugby Players Association.

Her academic role includes leading a MSc in Sport and Exercise Physiotherapy as well as research into rehabilitation following sports injury. Nicki is also a member of the Boards of the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales and Institute of Sport and Exercise Medicine in the UK. She is currently President of the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy. She was made a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in 2011 and an Honorary Life Member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sport and Exercise Medicine in 2014.

Her research and publication areas include the affects of injury on motor control and measurement of functional recovery following sports injury, whilst her main clinical experience is in sports injury management, with a specific interest in sports rehabilitation of upper and lower limb in the High Performance athlete. She lectures on these aspects nationally and internationally.

Nicki has worked with extreme environment athlete Richard Parks for around 15 years, when he was playing rugby for Pontypridd. They re-connected for a Sport Relief challenge in 2012 and Nicki has been working with Richard ever since. She is an integral part of Richard's team, devising tailored programmes as part of conditioning for his various challenges as well as managing any injuries he develops along the way. Richard's nickname for Nicki (who is somewhat shorter than Richard) is the "Pocket Rocket."

Greg Rose, DC is a board certified Doctor of Chiropractic and holds an engineering degree from the University of Maryland. He is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner and a Fellow in the International Academy of Clinical Acupuncture. Greg specializes in 3-dimensional biomechanics, strength and conditioning, manual therapy, rehabilitation, nutritional supplementation and therapeutic exercises as they each relate golf.

Through the past 15 years, Greg has helped thousands of golfers of all skill levels reach peak athletic performance. His cutting edge yet research-based form of functional training combined with golf-specific motor learning drills have made Greg one of golf's top strength and conditioning professionals.

Greg is the co-host of The Golf Fitness Academy seen on the Golf Channel. Over the past seven years he has filmed over 70 shows and is frequently used as a fitness expert on the Golf Channel. "The Body Swing Connection" seminar series has made Greg one of the most requested speakers in golf health and fitness. He has lectured in over 19 countries and has been featured in many golf and news publications.

Combining an engineering background with an expertise on the human body, Greg helped pioneer the field of analyzing 3-dimensional motion capture models of the golf swing. That research has helped golf professionals all over the world gain a better understanding of how the body works during the golf swing.

Karin Gravare Silbernagel, PT, PhD, ATC
is an Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy, at the University of Delaware. A native of Gothenburg, Sweden, she received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Boston University, and earned both an advanced masters degree in physical therapy and her PhD in Medicine (Orthopaedics) from the University of Gothenberg. Dr. Silbernagel is a Certified Athletic Trainer and a Certified Specialist in Physiotherapy in Sports Medicine, Swedish Association of Registered Physiotherapists. She has published numerous papers and is an active presenter nationally and internationally.

Holly Silvers, PT, DPT
Holly J. Silvers is a board certified Physical Therapist specializing in sports orthopaedic rehabilitation in Santa Monica, CA. She is a graduate of Western University of Health Sciences with a Masters Degree of Physical Therapy and of Rutgers University (BS: Biological Sciences and Communications).  She is a current member of United States Soccer Federations Men's and Women's National Medical Team, a member of FIFA's F-Marc Medical Research Committee, and a member of the International Cartilage Research Society's Rehabilitation Committee.   In addition, she is the director of rehabilitation for Major League Soccer's Chivas USA,  the Los Angeles Galaxy, the Women's Professional Soccer's LA Sol and the Amgen Tour of California pro-tour cycling race.

Currently, she is the director of research at the Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Research Foundation with a primary focus on ACL Prevention, articular cartilage injury prevention and rehabilitation, sports hernia prevention and head injury prevention in athletes.  Ms. Silvers also presides on the editorial board of the British Journal of Sports Medicine and has published several peer reviewed articles on the prevention of ACL injury, ACL epidemiology, sports hernia and patellofemoral pain.

Kristian Thorborg has been a specialist in sports physiotherapy and musculoskeletal physiotherapy since 2004, and is an Associate Professor at the Copenhagen University. He has published more than 50 peer reviewed articles and 20 book chapters. He has been lecturing at the Copenhagen University since 2009, and has been an invited speaker at more than 50 national and international conferences. Prof Thorborg was the Editor In Chief for the journal of Danish Sports Medicine from 2007-10 and Chairman for the Revision of National Clinical Specialization in Physiotherapy in Denmark (2010-11). Prof. Thorborg works as a researcher at the Sports Orthopedic Research Center - Copenhagen and Physical Medicine Rehabilitation - Copenhagen (PMR-C), which are both part of the Copenhagen IOC Research Centre. Prof. Thorborg also still sees patients, as well as doing consultancy.

Kevin E. Wilk, PT, DPT, FAPTA has lead a distinguished career as a clinical physical therapist for the past 31 years, as a leading authority in rehabilitation of sports injuries and orthopaedic lesions. He has made significant contributions to laboratory research, biomechanical research and clinical outcome studies.

Kevin is currently Associate Clinical Director for Champion Sports Medicine (a Physiotherapy Facility) in Birmingham, AL. In addition, he is the Director of Rehabilitative Research at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham and is Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Kevin is also the Rehabilitation Consultant for the Tampa Bay Rays' Baseball Team, and has worked with the Rays for 16 years.

Dr. Wilk received his physical therapy from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, IL., and his DPT from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of HealthCare Professions in Boston, MA. Dr. Wilk has published over 165 journal articles, over 105 book chapters and has lectured at over 750 professional and scientific meetings. Kevin is on the review boards of 9 journals. Dr Wilk has received numerous professional awards, and twice served as president of the SPTS.

While RISPT status does not license an individual in other countries, it does notify that the individual has achieved the highest level of qualification in his or her country.

Currently, members of the following member organizations are able to apply and receive acceptance immediately.

- Australia 
- Denmark 
- Ireland: Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists, Level 3 Accreditation in Sports Physiotherapy 
- New Zealand: Complete the Specialisation Pathway through the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand. Must complete specialisation in the Musculoskeletal Category. Applications for NZ Board MSK Specialty must have a sports focus with evidence provided.    
- Sweden 
- The Netherlands 
- United Kingdom: Continuing Professional Development Level 3, Gold 
- United States: APTA Sports Certified Specialist

Cost for registration is only 50 euros and is good for five years. Renewal is available for 20 euros. A certificate will be emailed to you in order that you may print and display it.

Note: All applications will be approved by the member organization before granting registration. Please allow for ample time for your member organization to respond to IFSPT inquiries. We also appreciate submission applications only from those pre-qualified as listed above.
