October 2016
Message from Principal Kuminka

Coebourn Elementary is a school that achieves academic growth, fosters a positive learning environment, and welcomes parent support. Teachers continuously grow as educators to provide the highest level of quality instruction. Faculty participate in data teams and professional learning communities to collegially analyze student data to identify strength and needs of students in order to effectively enhance academic skills.
Coebourn students read over 95 million words last year as part of the Reading Counts program during the 2015/2016 school year.  Students who read a million words attend the Brookhaven Borough Council meetings with me to be honored in their community for achieving this awesome accomplishment. Students who meet established grade level reading counts' standards will be recognized monthly and at the end of the school year.
Coebourn Elementary earned two significant awards within the state and at the national level. Coebourn is recognized as a 2015 National School of Character and a Positive Behavior Support State Banner School. Coebourn has implemented a Positive Behavior Support and Character Education Program to maintain a positive learning environment. Respect, Responsibility, and Readiness are core values that are reinforced and expected of the staff, students, and parents. Behavioral expectations are integrated within the education of students school-wide. Students are recognized daily and monthly for modeling positive values. Coebourn's new slogan is "Building Character Brick by Brick".

Flu Facts
from
The CDC
(Center for Disease Control)
Did you know:
  • The flu is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs caused by influenza viruses.
  • Children 2 to 17 years old are nearly 2 to 3 times more likely to be infected with the flu than adults.
  • School-age children are the main spreaders of the flu virus to other children, adults and older people.
  • Children younger than 5 had similar hospitalization rates from the flu as people 50-64 years of age.
  • More than 200,000 people in the US are hospitalized each year because of the flu.
  • The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated; everyone in the family over 6 months of age should get the flu vaccine every year.
  • You cannot get the flu from the flu vaccine. The vaccines are made not to cause infection. Some people may experience side effects, but it is not the flu.
So protect yourself and your family NOW: Get your flu vaccines today!

CALLING All
COEBOURN READERS

Coebourn once again is participating in Scholastic Reading Counts!
The goal of Reading Counts is to create lifelong readers by surrounding students with a wide variety of leveled literature and nonfiction texts in the classroom, in the school library, and at home. With Scholastic Reading Counts! students have a Lexile®-based independent reading program that tracks their success on the books they read, in and out of school. This technology-based program creates a personalized and engaging learning environment that ensures independent reading accountability. Scholastic Reading Counts intends to MOTIVATE students with suggested reading choices that match their interests and reading levels. This program is available to all 2nd through 5th grade students. Students in 2nd grade have a goal of 20,000 words read per month, while students in grades 3-5 are set to reach 30,000 words. Students may choose an independent book and when finished t take a ten question computerized quiz on the book. Seven out of the ten questions must be  answered correctly in order for the students to pass the quiz. The total number of words for the book read will be tracked throughout the year. If the book does not a Reading Counts quiz, students may write a summary of the book to receive credit. Any student who reaches 1,000,000 words will  be recognized both at school and at Brookhaven Borough Council!
Stay tuned......More to come next month about READING COUNTS!!

Meet Coebourn's New Teachers

Sharon Lachman (Permanent 4th Grade Teacher)

I am so excited to be part of the Coebourn family!  I am new to Coebourn but not the Penn-Delco School District.  I worked as the Child Study Team Coordinator at Parkside, Northley, and Sun Valley over the last eleven years.  Prior to that, I taught fourth grade in the Upper Darby School District for twelve years.  Through all those years my husband and I raised four children of our own!  In my short time at Coebourn, I am so impressed by the curiosity and kindness of the students.  I am looking forward to a fantastic year ahead!

Sarah Constan (4th Grade Long Term Sub for Allison Carey)

Before returning to West Chester University to complete my Bachelor's Degree in Early Grades Preparation, I had a prior career in sales and marketing. I previously studied International Business and German, but was always eager to earn my teaching degree.  I proudly reside in the Penn-Delco School District with my husband and 2 year old son.

Nick Carboni (5th Grade Long Term Sub for Jamie Keefer)

I am excited to be teaching 5th grade this year at Coebourn. Being a part of the Coebourn family for the past two years has been wonderful. Prior to my last two years in Coebourn, I completed my student teaching in State College, PA, where I also completed my undergrad at Penn State University. I am ecstatic to teach a wonderful group of students during an important year of their lives and I look forward to being involved in the community.

4 Schools 1 Book Initiative Begins Again!

Students are asked to join all elementary students across Penn-Delco SD and read with a family member The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. During morning school announcements, students will have a chance to answer questions based on the book. In addition, teachers will be conducting fun activities that go along with this chapter book.

Thank Dr. Steinhoff for reading the first chapter to our students and leading this community vision of literacy. Miss Musho did an excellent job with running our kick-off assembly. The picture above illustrates Mrs. Roe and Mrs. Kuhn competing for the best Lemonade Stand at our kick-off assembly!
