Top 5: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is going strong across DPS. We asked you to tell us how you're celebrating and we received some great entries! Read the full list below and congratulations to our random giveaway winner, Matthew Craig of South High School.
  1. "A few of my AVID students came to me last year and asked, 'Why don't we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?' I didn't even know it existed! So, this year, I decided to rectify that. At the start of every day, we are doing short presentations on famous/influential Hispanic individuals to generate a conversation about their contributions to society. At the end of the month, some of the kids in my class want to put together a potluck celebrating the month with cultural foods. I am so proud because the ideas came from them. They wanted something to change, and they changed it!"
-- Matthew Craig, South High School
  2. "We did a story on EDUCA Radio about Susana Cordova and her legacy at DPS.  Check out the story!
-- Roberto Gatan, EDUCA Radio, Multicultural Outreach Services
  3. "I plan to write things in both Spanish and English, and highlight notable Hispanic mathematicians in my learning environment."
  4. -- Tasha Hanley, McGlone Elementary
  5. "We had an assembly on Sept. 16 to celebrate the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. The assembly was presented in both English and Spanish. We gave students the history of Mexican Independence Day, and student re-enacted El Grito de Dolores. El Grito is re-enacted by the president of Mexican annually on the 16th of September. We had students perform traditional Mexican dances and, of course, our Mariachi Juvenil de Bryant Webster performs. It was a great way to celebrate culture and honor the importance of bilingualism."
  6. -- Pamela Liñan, Bryant Webster Dual Language ECE-8
  7. "One way Denver Public Schools celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month is by participating for the seventh year in a row with an information booth at 'Fiestas Patrias' -- a festival celebrating Mexican Independence Day."
  8. -- Salvador Carrera, EDUCA TV, Multicultural Outreach Services
