Teacher Night at the Fed

Chelsea Milling Company "Jiffy" Mix

Please join us on Monday, October 24 from 5-8pm for Teacher Night at the Federal Reserve to experience a curriculum based around Chelsea Milling Company. Chelsea Milling Company is best know for its line of "Jiffy" Mixes. CEO Howdy Holmes will be on hand to tell the entrepreneurial story of this Michigan based company, enjoy a dinner featuring recipes from the Jiffy Mix cookbook, and experience two of the lessons in a hands-on format.

All attendees will receive a gift package of items to take home with them!

AGENDA

Chelsea Milling Company CEO Howdy Holmes: The Entrepreneurial Story of "Jiffy Mix"

Dinner: All food served will be from the Jiffy Recipe Book

Hands on Lesson-Thinking Inside the Box: In this hands-on lesson, students will learn how to create a three-dimensional box out of a sheet of paper using geometry and the engineering design/redesign process.  Simulating the packaging design that Mabel Holmes did for the original box of Jiffy Mix, they will then package a product to market the latest in toys.

Hands on Lesson-From Mabel to the Table: Innovation happens everywhere - including the dinner table.  Mabel Holmes felt sorry for her son's friend who had a biscuit that looked "like a hockey puck", so that night she concocted a ready-to-use baking mix for fluffy homemade biscuits.  Using math in the classroom, students will create, taste test, and market a recipe to share with the group.
