Staving Off the Flu
As flu season approaches (it usually peaks from October to May), Innovative Preventive Care (IPC) offers some preventative and lifestyle tips for a better chance of avoiding the flu.
  • Vaccination - Schedule a flu shot. The CDC recommends that everyone get a flu vaccine by the end of October, if possible. For a naturopathic option, Dr. Xan Simonson offers an Engystol and Vitamin B12 injection that has proven to be more effective in preventing the flu and colds. There are no side effects and the injection cost is $35. Call the office at 480.776.0626 to schedule a visit today.
  • Sleep - Maintaining a balanced sleep routine can be an extra challenge during the holiday season as schedules get busy, but try to aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Consistent inadequate sleep lowers the body's defenses needed for fighting viral infections.
  • Stress - Excessive stress can decrease immune function and make it easier to come down with the flu. Establishing stress management techniques like deep breathing, exercise, yoga or meditation can help ensure that every day stress won't leave you vulnerable to the flu.
  • Diet - A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and quality proteins is a foundation for a healthy immune system. Avoiding excessive sugar can keep the immune system working at the level needed to fend off viral infections, like the flu.
  • And make sure keep up good hygiene by frequently washing with soap and water.  Read more about the new ruling on antibacterial soaps and why they should be avoided.

Dr. Levitt suggests a regime of immunity-focused supplements to assist in building up your natural defenses. Read more about them in "Spotlight on Supplements" below.

Healing Therapies
Say Goodbye to the Pain
Are you in pain? Pain is among the most common reasons for a doctor visit and the foremost cause of disability in the United States. Did you know there are many alternatives to medication and surgery? The Naturopathic Physicians (NP) at IPC take a Comprehensive Approach to Pain Management (CPM). During a visit with Dr. Xan Simonson and Dr. Cindy Romero, they will explore the root cause of your pain and determine if it is an anatomical change to the joint(s), functional pathology or both.

Drs. Simonson and Romero utilize a variety of modalities such as traditional oriental therapeutic massage, acupuncture specially designed for pain management (Gua Sha), Biomodulator/Low Light Laser Therapy, and a diverse repertoire of unique injection protocols to support pain management. Each consultation with these NPs will also include a review of diet, exercise and supplements that will aid in your healing process.

Oriental Therapeutic Massage is often used by itself or in combination with other modalities. It is an ancient form of massage therapy which primarily has its roots in Asia. This technique, developed centuries ago, is used predominantly to treat joint and muscle pains, reduce stress and tension, increase blood circulation, maintain a healthy, beautiful body and for general peace of mind, relaxation and comfort. It is intended to balance and harmonize the flow of chi (the life force) through meridians (energy pathways). Oriental massage stimulates the same points stimulated in acupuncture.

Supplements Supplement Support
Immunity Boosters
Get ahead of the flu and cold season now by stocking up on Vitamins A & C, Zinc, Echinacea and ginseng to defend your system from the flu and colds. One great way to get all these nutrients is with our Bio-Vegetarian and Stamets 7 supplements - two of Dr. Levitt's favorites.

Of course, please discuss these supplements with your provider before taking them to ensure they are right for you and will not interfere with any other supplements or medications you may be taking.

Viracon is a powerful combination of immune enhancing herbal extracts. They function as potent immune system enhancers by increasing cytokines, and the production of other important immune factors.

Bio-Vegetarian is a great way to get all the defense nutrients in one supplement. Dr. Levitt recommends starting a regime at the onset of a cold or flu by taking 2 pills four times a day for 4-5 days, and then decreasing to 2 pills three times a day for the duration of your illness.

Stamets 7 is a great immunity booster. The key ingredients is a blend of the mycelium from seven different mushrooms which helps increase your natural killer cells and macrophage - which help to fight off your infection. Dr. Levitt recommends taking 2 capsules twice a day for 14 days for optimal immune support.
