Driving Question: How can we, as city planners, design a plan for Houston to take up to 1 million refugees and resettle those people in a sustainable environment?

Quantum Squad, a junior cohort, is developing effective ways to possibly resettle 1 million people to the city of Houston. In engineering, the primary concern is water supply, so students are designing filters to extract and purify water. In environmental science, students are focusing on populations. In history,  the project is used as an analogy of colonization. Students are also developing their own constitution. English is helping with the technical writing and research including annotated bibliographies and project summaries. The cohort is receiving a lot of help from PAIR Houston on their project; an organization currently working with refugees. Mrs. Mein has put in the legwork for the project to come together.
Student Spotlight:
This week, we are recognizing Senior Fernanda Reyes who is a helpful, friendly, and engaging student. Fernanda is a confident voice in student discussions and shares great content in the classroom. Along with her student classes, Fernanda is taking on a weekly 20-hour internship! She is always positive and maintains a really good work ethic in and out of school.
Teacher Spotlight
Dr. Angela Pitcher is the new engineering teacher for the seniors here at Energy. She has an undergraduate degree in biology and physical geology from Mt. Allison University and a Ph.D. in geosciences - focusing on organic geochemistry - from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Dr. Pitcher worked in a world class organic geochemistry lab at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, focusing on biomarkers for paleoclimate work. She then moved into the oil and gas industry, working for Exxon, Shell, and then Chevron studying organic compounds, working as an exploration geochemist, and an environmental specialist. Dr.Pitcher sincerely believes in the power of the engineering process and hopes to apply her knowledge of sciences and the industry to help her students succeed as future industry leaders.

STELLAR SUPPORT: High-five to Mrs. Tosha Hicks, Mrs. Bernick Kirksey, Mrs. Antonia Bustos, and Ms. Quioza Grimes for working every day to provide students with food to eat. Though not everyone says it, we here at Energy appreciate you.
AWESOME ADMIN: The seniors in Posse would like to acknowledge Mrs. MacGregor for getting Energy students involved in the Posse Foundation. Thank you for supporting them throughout the process and thank you for being an outstanding dean.

SUPER STUDENT: Mr. Pla tón would like to high-five Thor Preimesberger for all of his hard work in APUSH. Good job Thor, and keep up the hard work!

PROACTIVE PARENT: Mrs. Rachel Lowe is the parent of our campus parents, and she has been consistently volunteering on our school. Her enthusiasm about Energy and her willingness to help support us is truly appreciated! Thank you!

Make it a great day for someone else by publicly  acknowledging a member of Energy.

Student Insight

The Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test ( PSAT ) is coming up shortly for all of our Energy Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors. Below are some tips and tricks of the trade in order to help you achieve the highest score possible.

Better Late than Never:  Study, study, and study some more. Any studying is better than none at all.

Khan Academy is a Lifesaver Khan Academy offers a variety of tools including free, yes free, online practice for the SAT and ACT. There's nothing specific for the PSAT, but if you take their SAT practice it will prepare you more than enough for the test.

Finish the Whole Test:  Finish the whole test. This sounds simple, but as you start to test, sometimes questions get too hard and you want to quit. Finishing the whole test improves your chances for a higher score.

The Test Matters:  This test matters. This is your first shot at showing colleges you have what it takes to succeed. From the PSAT results, colleges will screen you for the  National Merit Scholarship Program

Educated, Not Randomized:  If you truly don't know an answer, make an educated guess through the process of elimination. Also, this test doesn't penalize you for wrong answers; so, try your hardest to narrow down the answer selection.
