Fall songbird migration seems to be in full swing. Get outside now! We had a wonderful walk along the now placid St. Vrain River. One year ago, we would have been birding under about eight feet of water where we were today. A new visitor to Golden Ponds might not even realize that a flood had occurred a year ago. Nature heals and people build. We had a sharp-shinned hawk that kept crossing our path this morning. While I enjoy seeing sharpies, it does tend to clear the rest of the birds out. At one point, the sharp-shinned flew away from us and in the distance we saw huge clouds of songbirds scattering to avoid capture.

Blue-Headed Vireo
This was a "state" bird for me, meaning I had never seen one in the state before this morning. For many others on the walk the blue-headed vireo was a life bird! The blue-headed is a bird of eastern North America which rarely graces our state. Formerly known as the eastern race of the solitary vireo, several years ago the species was split from one species and three subspecies to create three new species; blue-headed, Cassin's, and plumbeous. Our most common of the three is the plumbeous vireo. We had some great looks at this bird until our friend the sharp-shinned hawk came around.
