Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas
Terrell ISD Awarded $150,000 Grant for Welding Program
In October 2015, the Texas Workforce Commission dedicated $1 million dollars to support collaborations between Workforce Development Boards and Economic Development Corporations to provide high-demand occupational job training in local workforce areas.

Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas was awarded $75,000.00 from the Texas Workforce Commission and Terrell Economic Development Corporation pledged to match dollar for dollar for a total project cost of $150,000. Welding is a high demand job that is continually exasperated by the oil and gas industry need for welders. Terrell ISD is providing students, primarily made up of juniors and seniors, the facility where the training and equipment is located. Trinity Valley Community College (TVCC) provided a qualified instructor to facilitate the training. In addition to providing this training for high school students, TVCC is also utilizing the ISDs facility and equipment to offer classes for adult continuing education and job skills development. The primary objective of this program will be to provide high school students with nationally recognized industry certifications and dual credit at TVCC. The high-demand job training grant will ultimately prepare workers to enter the workforce with the skills the industry needs. The grant is scheduled to end October 31, 2016 with ten students completing training.

Three successful components of a sector development strategy may include the following:
  • Providing employers and employees in an identified sector a place to network and share ideas;
  • Identifying industry-related needs; and
  • Creating a strategy to identify industry-based training ad certifications needed to expand and enhance the available workforce.
